Hello all. I am having a mastectomy (one side) on 3 Nov ( and terrified at the prospect) I have already had chemo, 6 lots of FEC, finished 19 Sep.Now please can you give me advice…I like keep fit, gym and running ( my diagnosis was 3 weeks after I ran my first ever London Marathon,) and am wondering about running with a prosthesis, mastectomy sports bras and all that kind of stuff. Not planning to have reconstruction. Advice & your experience very gratefully received
Hi MandH,
I am a runner, and started running again three weeks after my mastectomy, which was in March. My first run was a very gentle five minutes around the block! I continued to run all through chemo - finished last month - and always found I felt much better for it. I ran the Race for Life between chemos 6 & 7.
I bought a foam prosthesis from one of the catalogues (can’t remember now, might have been Nicola Jane or Amoena) - principally for swimming, but I use it for running too. It was quite cheap - you can get much more expensive ones but I thought I’d try the cheap one first & see how I got on. It has been fine for me. I am only a AA cup, which helps, I don’t know how a foam one would work out if you were large.
Good luck with the operation, and happy running! Must sign off as off to the swimming pool - have just started rads and am allowed to swim for the next couple of weeks until my skin gets red
xx
thanks for this, Roadrunner, i will look at foam prosthesis, i am a DD but hopefully can sort something!
I also ran through my chemo, I found it really helped to lift my spirits, and am sure it helped my body cope with the chemo too. Hope the rads goes ok for you, enjoy the swimming xx
