Flu and Covid injections

Hi I’ve seen previous posts on this but this year I have received mixed advice on whether now I am out of active treatment just on routine medications (letrozole, abemaciclib). I’ve had an invite but also seen via the media mixed messsges on the whether these are safe. I’d appreciate any advice. Thank you

Hi gsd1007

Thanks for your post asking if it’s safe to have flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, as you are taking letrozole and abemaciclib for breast cancer. It can be confusing when you’re getting mixed advice.

As abemaciclib can lower your immunity, It’s not usually recommended to have live vaccines, which contain small amounts of the virus. The flu vaccine is generally recommended for anyone at risk of lowered immunity. Some treatments for breast cancer do mean you’ll be eligible for a covid vaccine as well, However, it’s important to contact your treatment team, as they’re best placed to let you know what would be recommended in your individual situation. You can also ask them about which vaccinations are safe for you to have.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can often be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. You can be in touch with your volunteer by phone or email and they can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0800 138 6551 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.
