fluoxetine does it help with menopausal symptoms.

hi all,
was wondering if anybody has been prescribed low dose of fluoxetine ( antidepressants)for menopausal symptoms. i wanted to know if it had help with symtoms and was there any side effects. thanks gaynor xxx

hi,

Haven’t been on low level for meno symptoms, but have been on fluoxetine for depression at same time as being on hormone treatment. I must say I didn’t notice any improvement in hot flushes anyway! But I was on tamoxifen and it might be different if you’re on another hormone.

What I would like to highlight though is that there is now evidence that fluoxitine interferes with the effectivenes of tamoxifen,so if you are on tamoxifen check it out with your onc.

There are a number of different anti’ds that are used in very low doses to help with menopausal symptoms, so if you start with one and it doesn’t do the trick, do go back and ask to swap to a different one, you may well find another suits you better.

I second the comment about fluoxetine (Prozac) interacting with Tamoxifen, so if your GP tries to prescribe Prozac while you’re on Tam, please get them to double-check before you accept a script for it, or speak to your onc or BCN.

hi yes iam on tamoxifen and zoladex. it was my bcn what recommended it. surly she would no the pros and cons of fluoxetine. thanks gaynor xxx

You would have thought so, but might be worth having a word. Give the helpline a ring in the morning and ask them, they will be able to direct you to any research that has been done on the subject, so you have a bit of knowledge yourself when you speak to your BCN.

thanks chocciemuffin for the advice. will give them a bell tomorrow xxx gaynor
