I think its properties are still good even heated. Finty posted some research a while back where the flaxseeds had been added to muffins and the women still had tumour growth reduction.
I don’t grind mine but add them whole to rice milk and then eat them as they’re easy to chew. I quite like them like that. Elinda x
Hi mekalar ,
Please dont think i have any problems with anyone making any changes after a BC DX as this is not the case at all,and i fully agree with you that each of us must do our own research and untimately do what feels right for all of us at the end of the day .
But I do passionately also believe that it is extreamly important in discussions like these that everyone who may be reading the forums has the access to all the available research/Studies/information/ and evidence to date, otherwise people are not able to make informed decisions because the discussions can become unbalanced and biast.
Reading this particular thread it does unfortuneatly seem to have a very one sided view and approach to any research, lots of the posts are talked of in terms of “Facts” or"Proof" which isnt very helpfull and can be very misleading , im not sure ive ever seen any of the posters challenge any of these issues?,so in my view this isnt very healthy, because if any thread becomes too one sided the “Facts” can of course get scewed .
Just my opinion, but i am awear that lots of others agree.
Hi all, I did wonder about the post-menopausal caveat re flax seeds, but decided to eat them anyway since they are a good source of omega3 and because logically (!) it makes sense that they would work pre- and peri-menopausally. My mum is 73 and doesn’t want to take her anti-oestrogen drug because of the risk of arthritis. She found tamoxifen unbearable frist time around too, and only lasted a few months on that. Also, she’s finding the herceptin very difficult to cope with so she’s thinking of stopping that after 2 treatments - there’s also more risk of arthritis and joint-swelling with that. She was very fit before this lot of bc, and her quality of life is dependent on her being able to garden and walk her dog, this is really important to her. I think her view is completely understandable. I’ve persuaded her to take the flax seeds and I hope it helps - it certainly can’t do any harm. However, I’m not sure her consultant agrees…
Thank you Linda, not sure if 2 different thread would be better ? may add confussion ? is there a specific topic you’d like to highlight you could always give it a go
Thanks Flinty yeah great links there also the flax & other seed is they contain Vit E too another important vitamin.
Hi HipChick I too love the taste of the seeds the flax is my favorite & I now have my old coffee grinder dug out & in pride of place on the work top raring to go Im sure they still have some benifit once baked … still taste good on the breads ive tried that have them.
Elinda I like them both ways I like them whole on fresh fruit But will grind them with the sunflower & pumpkin ones that I add to my cereal adds a lovely nutty flavour.
I think we are in the very difficult position of not having “facts” about diet and cancer but do have some “reliable recent research” that we can choose to consider but have to be only too aware that the complexity of factors impacting on breast cancer and the range of us as individuals makes it really difficult to establish “facts”. I’m glad this thread shares some of the most recent research - I can’t do this all by myself… I’d love some “facts” (as most/all of you would) but know that’s not realistic at the moment so have to decide based on the best info at the moment - and I respect others who make different decisions and am happy to read on this thread that they have. The controversies help me to see the issues more cleary - it’s an academic discussion not a personal attack and I’d hope this thread continues in this way.
I’m into drinking wheatgrass at the moment and have just read Joyce O’Brien’s book “Choose to Live” and her 10 year on story after dx of Stage 4 BC - a “green diet” worked for her but who knows if it will work for me but I certainly feel better having taken out lots of sugar and protein from my diet… and most of the research seems to back up this decision.
Hi Bubble why would your mums Consultant think it may not be good for her ? has he said as much, they usually keep quiet when you ask them their opinions on diet
Hi Francesw I use wheatgrass too I dont know if its the wheatgrass or other things im doing but my circulation has been so much better … do you use fresh frozen or the powder ? I use the powder. Yes there are alot of books out there re diets Ive read a few & find it interesting that although they may have different approaches they all seem to state alot of the ‘same’ facts regarding the subject
‘By means of anti-inflammatory activities a plant-based diet may contribute to the lower risk of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. A high intake of vegetables, fruit, and whole wheat as recommended by all international nutrition authorities provides a wide spectrum of bioactive compounds at health-promoting concentrations.’
I’ve got a thing about fibre at the moment! Elinda x
I think my point has been proven, so i will leave the “Gang Culture” to those who enjoy being involved in nastiness to another forum member.
Thank you.
Bubbletrouble - flax seeds could have additional benefits for your mum if she’s on herceptin. The intervention study showed that c-erbB2 expression (HER) was reduced by 71% in the flax seed arm of the diet.
Elinda I had to laugh when you asked what it tastes like thought of my 1st time trying it came to mind … it wasn’t good I tried it with water oh heck … it nearly came straight back up . haha I dont know about the drink but I turned green So I tried it with fresh squeezed juice SO much better & now I like the taste & have no trouble, I only have 1-2 teaspoons into the juice DONT HEAT IT this takes all its benifits away. Some days I dont take it if I know the foods im eating that day are alot of dark green veg so not to over do it with the iron.
One thing I will say is to check if you get some with the suppliers about the copper content as too much is not a good thing, If you get it from a good supplier they are most helpful in giving you all the facts & will mail you any facts you need to know from their suppliers. the one I have only has 0.5 mg of copper to every 100mg so its only a small trace.
My main fibre sources are wholegrain breads/ organic wholemeal I have organic oats/ cereals which I add some all bran too on some mornings … if you like the white part of a pomegranite that is high in fibre
Finty - My main sources of fibre are: porridge, whole grain rice (nearly every day), lentils (lots of), vegetables of all types. I don’t have that much fruit but do have bananas, pears and prunes. Also make some of my own cakes with wholewheat flour or brown rice flour.
Unfortunately I was very sick after eating wholewheat pasta after my first chemo session so I haven’t been able to touch the stuff since.
I don’t eat that much bread either but often use wholegrain spelt flour.
From what I’ve read, veg fibre seems to be the top of the bunch.
Not that helpful I’m afraid but others may have more suggestions.
Melakar - I’m going to Borough Market on Saturday in London and last time I was there they had fresh wheatgrass juice. Think I might give it a go.
Good luck with that Elinda I hope you like it. I used brown rice & wholewheat pasta I use the rice alot as I dont have potato like I used to only once or 2 times a week Shame about the pasta but can understand if thats what happened after chemo.
Yes anymore suggestions on the veg fibre would be great I only know of the dark leafy green ones have good amounts of fibre … I think carrots have a good amount too but could be wrong
oh dear, I am sat here racking my brains to find what fibre i had today. The answer is none. I am expecting to eat a small portion of brocolli tonight. but then I cannot think at all where else I might have it. is it in wine or beer?? surely not, thats liquid.
My digestion is wonderful and i dont get hungry except when I am expecting to. I think introducing nuts, seeds, and other things here would unbalance me.
perhaps I decended from an eskimo??? or one of those tibetans that lived on yaks meat and milk.
If my little lump has spread I will probably have to think again.
