I have just had my second dose of FEC and after both doses my mouth is discusting! Everything I eat or drink tastes like lard! I have tried mouth washes, ice pops, fizzy water and mints. Can anyone suggest anything so that I can eat? It’s bad enough not wanting to eat due to the headache and nausea!
Sorry just noticed my spelling!!! The chemo affects your eyesight too!!
try looking at top tips for chemo thread
i am sorry it is horrible

my spelling has gone terrible since I started chemo as well! I do tend to correct everything so people would not know but I have a lot more correction to do than previous
Hope my brain will return to normal
After starting chemo I described the taste in my mouth as similar to if you had eaten a really strong, garlicky pepperoni pizza and drank loads of really robust red wine and then gone to bed without brushing your teeth. OK I am a bit ashamed that I know that taste but when I told my best friend she said “ugh I had that taste last Sunday morning” so it ain’t just me!
I found a lot of things tasted “off” and so they didn’t help to get rid of the bad taste in my mouth but luckily for me I had some fruit flavoured boiled sweets in the office that I brought back from Tenerife and they really worked. Sadly I can’t just pop back and get more (or else I would send you some sweetie) but the nearest thing I can think of is Sherbet Lemons or Sherbet Strawberries if you have an old fashioned sweet shop nearby give them a go.
There is a sweety shop in Rochester high street (near my office) and it does all kinds of old fashioned boiled sweets and I am gonna have a wander down there next week - I have recently spent over a grand on dental work and REALLY did not intend to eat sweets EVER again but needs must.
Can I just say that my sense of taste has gone back to normal now, as I keep saying every woman experiences different things but I hope it will get better for you too.
Luckily the WINE still tastes nice to me xxx
Hi
One of the worse side effects I had with my chemo was my mouth and unfortunately it got progressively worse with each session, I think it builds up each time and there isn’t a big enough break in between sessions for it to completely clear up before it is set off again. My advice would be to speak to your onc nurse because there are lots of things you can have that will help particularly if it becomes full blown thrush as mine did. I had two types of mouth wash, a mouth spray, two different mouth gels and two courses of anitbiotics by the end [sorry that hardly gives you anything to look forward to] but it has all gone now and my taste buds are back to normal [chemo finished Nov 07].
I used a soft toothbrush for my teeth plus another one that I dipped in Diflam mouth wash [it isn’t as harsh as Corsodyl] and rubbed GENTLY over my tongue and sides of my mouth 3 or 4 times a day. Drinking skimmed milk through a straw also helped [skimmed is easier witht he nausea]
Take it easy and I hope it doesn’t get too awful.
Love AJ xxx
Hi
Chewing gum was the only thing that worked for me. Try trident - it kept my mouth moist and I got through packets of the stuff. Still using it now after chemo has finished, must wean my self off it now!
