Further tests

My mother now 70 had early stage breast cancer 6 years ago. She had a lumpacomy, radiation therapy and was on a hormone tablet for 5yrs. Always had yearly mammograms. Inbetween her recovery she found out she was carrying the BRCCA 2 gene.
She was recently called for a regular mammogram and an mri. She is been called back for further tests, an area of concern on mammogram. Im worried about the outcome.

Hi spring25

Thank you for posting.

It is understandable to be concerned about the outcome of the tests that your mum is having after being recalled for further investigations following her regular mammogram. It is natural to worry, especially as she was treated for breast cancer 6 years ago and has been found to have an alteration to the BRCA2 gene. You do not say whether you have also had genetic testing, but as an altered gene has been identified in your family you are eligible for testing if you wish. You can talk to your GP about this if you would want to consider it.

Your mum will attend an assessment clinic where she will have further tests such as another mammogram, an ultrasound and possibly a biopsy of the area they are investigating. If you can, it may be helpful for you to attend the clinic with your mum to provide support and ask any questions that you both may have. If it is not possible for you to be there, it may help for you to ask your mum for permission to contact a breast care nurse at the clinic to ask any questions that you may have, including how long it will take to receive the results of the tests.
