Getting an implant replaced

Hi all I’m 8.5 years on from mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with an implant. I’ve gained about 2.5 stone since then and my remaining real breast has put on approximately one and half cup sizes. My reconstructed breast has gained fat around it bit not over it due to the lack of breast tissue and now looks mis-shapen and doesn’t match at all. Has anyone had their original implant replaced? Is this even a thing?!

Dear misskd74,

So pleased to you have joined the forum for advice, one of my dear friends, is having her implants replaced next weeks, due to the fact they are over 10 years old this has been suggested by her consultant.

If your feeling uncomfortable, please asked your GP for a referral.

Wishing you lots of luck going forward

Hi misskd74

Thanks for posting.

Weight changes following breast reconstruction can impact on the shape and size of the breasts and it’s understandable you’re wondering if further surgery may be possible.

Further surgery, including replacing an original implant may be recommended for different reasons including asymmetry.

It’s also important to get any changes to the breast checked out so as @Tili suggests, you can speak to your GP and they can refer you to the breast clinic for further assessment if necessary.

Talking to someone who has had a similar experience can often be helpful. Our Someone Like Me service can match you with a trained volunteer who’s had a similar experience to you. You can be in touch with your volunteer by phone or email and they can share their personal experiences to answer your questions, offer support or simply listen to how you are feeling.

You can ring the Someone Like Me team on 0800 138 6551 or email them at someone.likeme@breastcancernow.org, so they can then match you to your volunteer.
