Getting Ready for Lumpectomy

I find the M&S Body Soft Non wired Post Surgery bras are great. I usually wear non wired bras but my usual Triumph ones weren’t forgiving enough. It’s a year now since my lumpectomy and I still buy the same bra. One thing to note is I assumed my breast which had the lumpectomy would be a bit smaller after the op. Bizarrely it seems bigger LOL. At least these bras come in differing cup sizes. The Asda bras I tried were a nonstarter for me.

thanks Celestine. I think I’ll go to the M&S and try on everything I can find, and if no joy just order loads of stuff online and then return. I hate the faff of returning stuff but I guessss it has to be done, that’s why I hate shopping online for clothes! x

Hi there I have found having had my lumpectomy in June that the rectangular pillow that fits onto the seatbelt in the car-Amazon- a God send for ‘normal’ life after also front fastening bras cos certain movements are not going to be comfortable …now going through chemo and loosing my hair … before it got bad I chose to bunch my hair up all over my head and cut it off so it could go to making wigs for other people with hair loss …it made me feel better -a bit - about yet another knock you experience going through this … As for when to sort out when you have follow up treatment you and in a process that takes over and the oncology team tell you the next steps .

Hey ! II had a lumpectomy one year ago . Make sure you keep it clean and don’t try to pull out istitches . I’m speaking from experience I tried to do that . I bought a soft sports/T-shirt bras in a bigger size to wear . I was so happy to have the surgery to remove the cancer . I’m praying for you :heart:

Hello, had my first DCIS lumpectomy 16 May - first ever op and general anaesthetic at age 73. Understandably very nervous as I didn’t know how I would react. Everything went well , home the same day and out for a stroll with my neighbour and her dog in the afternoon. ( every one is different! ). Had done exercises before and found I was gradually reaching for things higher up in the cupboard during the first week while trying hard not to over stretch. Pillows to support me for the first couple of nights and wore my normal bra over night for a bit of protection… .minimal painkillers. However pathology found a second lobular ) tumour and I’ve had a second lumpectomy and now about to start radiotherapy. Remember - everyone is different.

I bought a soft bra - the Nurse said look at the fanciest one you can see in the shop and go to the opposite end to that….i still managed to find a decent one from Bravissimo (I’m pretty large chested) as be also bought some bra extenders so I could loosen it but still have some support. Pillow for under the arm as well as sleeping is probably where I found the most discomfort, pain wise was pretty manageable. Other than that I did some batch cooking and got a decent wee playlist sorted on Netflix!

I’m back home after having my lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy today. First time having a GA which for me was the most frightening part. Most uncomfortable part was having the guide wire put in via ultrasound and then mammogram just before the surgery.
I was discharged after 2 hours as felt good, had eaten passed water and obs were normal.
Not felt any significant pain yet, the original biopsy for me was much worse. Two dressings in place and full movement in right arm which again I thought would be worse.
Feeling very grateful to be home wearing the most delightful stockings eating an ice cream and sipping tea in bed.
I already have my appointment for results on 27th August. Keeping everything crossed it hasn’t spread and that I can focus on treatment, which is expected to be radiotherapy and hormone blocking meds.
Wishing you all the very best.

That is great news that you are feeling so well, hope that continues :crossed_fingers:t2:

Please make sure that you keep up with your exercises even though they seem a bit pointless when you feel so good in yourself!

Good luck for the 27th

Sounds like we have had a similar journey. My results appointment, after Sentinel node biopsy and lumpectomy (about 10 days ago) is on 26th August. Like you I found the idea of a general anaesthetic very frightening but it was all fine. I’ve had pain since then but not too bad at all, paracetamol did the job. Lots of bruising but that’s to be expected. Movement all now fine. I’m hopeful too that just radiotherapy and hormone blocking meds next but beginning to feel a really wobbly tbh. Sending you the best for 27th August. Fingers crossed for both of us that all will be as we expect. I am sure it will be x

Thanks everyone for your kind messages. Janb251 we do seem to have had a similar experience, I’m glad you are feeling well post surgery and hope your review has a positive outcome.

I was fortunate on the 20th to receive a call from my consultant advising that my pathology results were back. The two nodes are clear and my IDC is 5mm with some surrounding DCIS (not picked up from original biopsy), but clear margins confirmed. I’m due to have a further consultation on 27th to discuss further treatment but have been advised this won’t involve chemo which I’m extremely pleased about. I’m likely to need radiotherapy and hormone blockers.

Feeling very grateful but at the same time still reeling. Sending everyone in this space love and strength.

Thank you Factor50 for your kind words. My appointment today was a huge relief tbh. Clear margins, no spread through any lymph nodes. HER2 results confirmed as negative so no chemo required. Radiotherapy of course, and hormone blockers are required because I am ER+ and PR+. Still very wobbly but far less so than last week, it really is so much better than it could have been. Sending you best for your appointment tomorrow. Let us know how it goes xx. Echoing your thoughts of love and strength to all here.

I’m so pleased you had good news jenb251. I can completely relate to the wobbly feeling.

Met with my consultant surgeon today. All dressings finally removed which means I can enjoy a proper shower again (it really is the small things). Wounds are healing well, my greatest discomfort throughout has been to the rear of my armpit where nerve endings are, and this is finally starting to feel better.

I’ll need 5 sessions of radiotherapy and hormone blockers. Not sure which type yet.
I’ll receive an appointment to meet with an oncologist in a couple of weeks where it will all be further discussed.

I’ve only just turned 50 (my cancer was thankfully detected from my first routine screening) so menopausal status may influence this. Worried about the related side effects and how this will impact on my quality of life, but just going to have to see how things go. I’d only just started HRT a couple of months before diagnosis so stopped that immediately on finding out as mine is also hormone positive. I’m already back to having hot flushes etc. but just trying to manage these as best as I can for now.

Feeling extremely grateful but at the same time still trying to process what this all means for me. Hope everyone else going through this finds some light to focus on, I finally feel like my darkest days are lifting.
