Sorry guys I know this may seem a silly question. I have never been in hospital apart from a caesarian but that was nearly 20 years ago. I am due to have a lumpectomy in two weeks and I dont know what specifically will happen on the day. I get very generic letters from the hospital about if this happens then you need this etc. etc. Do I need to take my own night clothese although I should be a day case. Do I go in in my own day clothes and change into one of the hospital gowns. I dont want to take in unnecessary “stuff”
Hi Fiona. It’s not a silly question at all! If you are having your lumpectomy as a day case then you shouldn’t need any night clothes. You can wear your own clothes into hospital and they will tell you when you need to change into the hospital gown. You might have to wait around for quite a while so perhaps take a book or something if you don’t have company.
i would say just a pair of slippers and dressing gown(theatre gowns open at back ) go in your own day clothes but i suggest something zipped or buttoned at the front for ease and comfort. do take something to read or watch as can be long waits.
had my op two weeks ago and really was not as bad as i had made it in my imagination was able to come home after nursing staff were happy that i had something to eat and drink and been able to walk to the loo without feeling dizzy.
Fiona, you will probably have a pre-op assessment at your hospital when they should give you more information. The first time I was in was for a mammoplasty and they said I might go home the same day but be prepared for an overnight stay, which did happen. I wore the hospital gown the whole time though and didn’t really need anything other than dressing gown and slippers. Last week I returned for a mastectomy and was told I would def be in for one night, but be prepared for two. In fact I was in for 3 so was very glad of my kindle, clean PJs, and some toiletries. Lip balm is useful and some sweets to suck if your throat is sore after the anaesthetic. Some wet wipes to freshen you up and of course your mobile phone for contact with the outside world! Good luck! Chris x
