going mad - can't decide if zoladex better than ovaries removed

Hi

I’ve been following the threads on zoladex and have to make a decision before next week about whether to have my ovaries removed or start zoladex. My dilemma is that i have fibroids and hence am oestrogen dominant. I am 39 and have no children but have no desire either. I am worried that if I have ovaries removed I am in effect kissing goodbye to any future sex life. Then again, a successful sex life on zoladex sounds pretty remote too. Plus I hate the sound of monthly injections and more faffing as I will already be going to the hospital for herceptin. At the moment I am on rads having finished chemo on 3 march. I won’t be through rads til 6 may… so if i then have to wait to have ovaries removed, i could be looking at june before i even start on arimidex - so my other dilemma is = is this wait too long, am i at risk of cancer coming back. If I opt to have zoladex I guess I could start these now and get on the arimidex straight away. I just woudl love to be able to make an informed decision I am comfortable with. Can anyone shed any light, my mind is mush with thinking about it all. Carriexx

Hi Carrie

If you are premenopausal could you not take tamoxifen and that way you could keep your ovaries and not need zoladex?

Hi Carrie
I was dx in March 2007 aged 45, had 2 surgeries, lumpectomy and lymph nodes removed, followed by chemo and radio. As my tumour was oestrogen positive I was given the option of having my ovaries removed or having zoladex injections and letrozole tablets for 5 years , I cannot have tamoxifen for medical reasons, as I had to make the choice straight after I had been through all the treatments I felt it would be better to have the Zolodex injections rather than have any more surgery, as my body had been through enough. I have been having the injections monthly for 6 months now, apart from hot flushes I have not really noticed any other side effects. I do not know how long I can have these injections, I do not think that I was near the menopause as the chemotherapy did not stop my periods, so I may have to make the decision to have my ovaries removed at a later date. However I feel that I made the right decision at the time because it has given me some time to think and for my body to recover. My mind is still a mush though

best wishes
