Haematoma weeks after surgery

Hi i went for radiotherapy planning CT appointment and the onc rang me yesterday to say i had a haematoma in breast to be radiated. Its an old reconstruction with new implant after wle 10 weeks ago. I will now have my radiotherapy over 15 sessions instead of the planned 5. Its been seen regularly by dressings clinic because of redness heat and swelling, although its improving im just a bit worried about having the radiotherapy now. Has anyone had anything similar?

Hi @susynight sorry you haven’t had a response on the forum! You can always try the ask our nurses section if you’d like medical advice on this, though hopefully someone with personal experience does come along and see this

I had a failed procedure under X Ray guidance which had to be abandoned because a haematoma had formed my very tiny tumour was hiding inside and I was still actively bleeding. I had no redness or heat though I was quite bruised , but when the same Radiologist inserted a radio frequency tag prior to lumpectomy almost 7 weeks later she said there was still some haematoma remaining. I don’t know if they removed anything when I had my lumpectomy the following week or if the remainder was left to absorb. I would imagine this is something the Radiology team will have seen and dealt with before but I understand your concern and it’s always worrying when a plan changes . I would advise calling the Nurses on the helpline here and talking it through with them xx

Thankyou for your replies. Hope you are going on ok.
First radiotherapy this Thursday but still no improvement in haematoma symptoms. Hoping it doesnt nake it worse! To top it all ive felt a new lump but im hoping its where something was stitched on during surgery. I have a clinic appointment tomorrow so keeping everything crossed.

It could be fat necrosis which is a common complication of both surgery and radiotherapy - I had it as well and it eventually just absorbed . Obviously you’re going to speak to the clinic team about it so they may be able to get you scanned or something while you’re there. If they don’t know about it already it might be a good idea if you’re able to give them a heads up about it today . I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you xx

Thankyou yes ill speak to them and hopefully itll be something simple. The IDC ive just had originated in fat necrosis from original surgery. This lump is where the fat necrosis/IDC was so a little worrying but surely couldnt be cancer so soon so im expecting scar tissue or maybe reaction to surgery🤔

Hi thanks for asking. It went fine. I found the breath holding a bit difficult as have a bit of a bad chest. Ill have to practise a bit! Skin near axilla is itchy but e45 has calmed it down. Round 2 tomorrow.
I didnt get the lump checked as went for mammogram earlier and didnt really have the opportunity to discuss it. X
