Hair Colour Question

Hair Colour Question

Hair Colour Question I finished my chemo at the end of January. Can anyone tell me how long my hair has to be before I can have it coloured, and also what type of hair colour I could use? At the moment, I look like a 'mature 'Sinead O’Connor !

— Hi,

I finished chemo mid January as well. Like you I want to colour what little hair I have, but am under strict instructions from my hairdresser not to use anything containing peroxide (as its toxic apparently) so we’re trying to find some henna to give that a go.

—be very careful —A word of warning to anyone thinking about colouring their hair on regrowth. I was strongly advised by the staff in the breast team not to even consider colouring my hair until at the very least 6 months after chemo was finished.
But when it got to about a half inch long I got very impatient as it was growing in pure white and couldnt be seen well. I had the idea that if I put a tint in it, it would be seen better and i could stop wearing the dreaded wig.
I thought i would start with something very mild so i chose one of those shampoo in shampoo out colours. They are supposed to last for about 2 washes. I chose a mid brown which i thought would darken my hair enough for it to be seen.
Well, the mid brown colour showed up as bright, bright red !!! I looked like an unstruck match !! Not to worry i thought, it’ll wash back out in a couple of shampoos.
That was back in October of last year. I finally had long enough hair to go to the hairdressers and get it cut into a style this week. The hairdresser managed to cut out most of the red without leaving my hair too short.
It never did wash out and i still have pinkish tips which will hopefully be gone after my next cut in 6 weeks time.

—Bolly —Sounds very trendy to me - I once paid fortune to have red tips put in my hair.

Regards,

Denise

I’ve been told to wait until 6 months after chemo and to have a skin and strand test done before I go ahead with it. A month left - can’t wait (I’m sure I didn’t have this much grey before; must be the treatment, can’t possibly be my age!)

Hope this helps.

couldn’t wait Hi guys,
I finished chemo. begining of november last year, I too couldnt wait six months. I actually dyed my hair last month with a dye I got from a leading health food shop.

It turned out ok! I went for a sandy blonde look and it came out strawberry blonde. My friend who was in treatment at the same time did hers in december, with henna and she could have given ronald macdonald a run for his money. It was bright orange. But now it looks great as her hairdresser fixed it for her.

So good luck

I didn’t ask I just did it. Hair stated growing back mid chemo so was long enough to dye by the time chemo finished. Finished one week, dyed my hair two weeks later. My hair came back in exactly as it had gone out, even the grey was in exactly the same places! Don’t know whether I should have or not but have had no problems. I used Herbal Essences No 44! which is the same one I have used for the last 5 years or so, so I didn’t see any reason not to use it again. I’m sure lots of you out there could tell me why I shouldn’t have done this but what the hell, its done now (and has been done another twice since).

Neither did I Hiya Geebee,

I was told after treatment finished that I musn’t put any dye on my hair for at least 4 months after finishing chemo. Like Karen, I couldn’t wait.
I finished chemo at the beginning of Dec and as I was going away for Xmas, I wanted my sparse growth to look thicker, so I took lots of sensible advice and used a henna product that was recommended…no chemicals or harmful bleaches…ended up ‘JAFFA ORANGE’ I couldn’t get rid of the colour…no amount of washing, even tried tomato ketchup that someone suggested ( think they were having me on ), I’d try anything rather than be orange. I had to resort to a permanent plum/red dye which did cover the orange, for a while. I still didn’t feel like me, so tried to put some hilites in and guess what…yes, it turned out orange again.
I ended up putting a colour pre lightener on, which took out all the red and then put on a permanent mid-blonde dye, which turned out…yes, you guessed…bloomin’ ginger.
I have just had some dark brown lolites and some blonde hilites put in…I will be leaving it alone now…it’s a wonder I’m not bald again.
If I was you Geebee…I’d leave it for as long as you can.

Thanks all Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about hair colour. It sounds like I should leave it alone till at least six months has gone. The trouble is up until now, I have had a really funky wig and everyone where I work has told me how fab my ‘hair’ looks. I work in a secondary school and some of the students have told me what a great haircut I have!!! My real hair is coming through soooo grey and Im dreading the day I walk in ‘au natural’ ! Still, thats just vanity, I’m just so glad that I’ve reached this point after everything and am going to enjoy life to the max and be an own up grey haired 50yr old for a few months longer!
