hair dye

Hello
Now I’ve got a full head of hair again, I’m looking for a safe way to have it dyed to cover the grey. None of my local hairdressers seem to know anything about this - vegetable dye I think it is. Could anybody suggest how I can safely dye or any contacts - I live in the Sheffield area.

Also , does anyone have any thoughts on the safety of food dye?

Thank you
Jenty

Hiya Jenty

I finished chemo on 8th August last year. I couldn’t cope with the Bobby Ball look (black/grey & curly!!!) and asked my hairdresser about dyes. She said that, as long as I had a patch test (bit of dye behind the ear) and had no reaction, then she would be happy to colour it. I had it coloured mid November (3 months after finishing chemo - naughty aren’t I, lol) using the same dye as before dx and had no problems at all. Don’t know anything about the ‘safe’ colours as I haven’t used them, but I think Holland & Barrett sell them.

Good luck.

Hi Jenty,

I use a dye called Tints of Nature which has no amonia, resorcinal or parabens. It covers all my grey and is brilliant I use Natural platinum blonde colour and get it from a shop called Keep Yourself Right but if you put the make in google you may find somewhere near you that sells it. By the way it is a permanent dye.

Take care Pat

I used to have mines done professionaly every 5 weeks before BC. I was worried about what colour it would come back as I had started going grey in my early 20s (I’m now 46). I have been really lucky as it has come back a fantastic shade of silver and even the staff at my hairdressers have told me not to colour it. It was also baby fine before and now it’s thick and holds a short style really well. I use professional shampoo for silver hair and finish it with a professional product that puts a pearlised sheen on it. Being this colour has made me look very striking and I now wear bright colours I couldn’t touch when I was brunette. Anything purple looks fab! I don’t particularly have an old face and am not wrinkled as I don’t go in the sun due to being fair skinned, so I don’t have that “little old lady look”. OH thinks it’s very me and says he thinks it’s very funky. You do have to be careful with makeup shades though.

I use Tints of Nature as well and find it very good.If you have very strong greys like me just use less developer and it covers really well- also looks very natural. They sell it in Holland and Bartlett.

Thank you all so much - I’ll go for the Tints of Nature option.

Yours sounds lovely, Cherub, but I’m afraid I am going for the little old lady look as I am - was stopped for a survey in the highstreet and she assumed I was at least three years older than I was when trying to put me into a category!

I slapped nice and easy on after about 8 post chemo and had no problems. I don’t see any problem if you do a skin/strand test first. I didn’t bother though. tHere are a lot of ladies on here who have put bog standard dyes on. Not sure why you have to have the safe ones. perhaps you can have a reaction after chemo but not noticed any posts in the last 15 months of anyone who has had a bad reaction. not advocating anyone should do as I did just telling you what I did. Good luck with the hair love Eileen

I’m in Cherub’s camp. I am 49 and used to have a shoulder length bob that I coloured coppery/gold colours. Now I have short, greying hair, everyone tells me I look younger. And I love it!

Does anyone know if there’s any contra-indication to using a semi permanent colour immediately prior to surgery? If chemo is recommended when the post-mastectomy tests are complete, presumably it would be so long afterwards the effect of the pre-op colour would have gone anyway. I have always had long dark hair which I now tint mahogany, and I don’t want to miss what may be the last chance for a while to colour away the silver strands… before surgery on Saturday.

And does post-chemo hair always seem to grow back grey, whatever the original colour? What about eyebrows - do they come back dark? It shouldn’t be hugely significant but sometimes it really helps to put a lot of thought into things that aren’t… if you know what I mean…

Hi Lyn

don’t know anything about hair dyes as I have never used them.

As to whether hair always comes back grey, no it doesn’t. Mine was auburn (I’m 44) and now it is back, it is just a shade darker, but a lovely colour, and I have even more curls than before, just need to wash and go and it looks great. It does have strands of grey in but just the same amount as before. My eyebrows are slightly lighter than my hair, not dark at all.

Mine was long and dark with some greys After chemo it was a lot greyer- infact it came back almost white( I was 45) I shouldnt think there would be a problem with you dying it pre surgery. I think they only advice you to wait a while after chemo until the hair is strong enough to take a dye.Mine came back with a vengence and I was told I could dye it at my first post chemo appointment 10wks later! Ive no idea what colour it’s now as I’ve been dying it ever since- but looking at the roots probably still white.Hair everywere else still dark!
