I’m relatively new to this site and I’m sure this will have been asked before but can only find discussions about colouring your hair in the searches I’ve done.
I shaved my hair off 2 weeks ago and was wondering what people’s experiences are with the colour that it grows back after chemo. The only 2 people I know who have had bc both had it grow back grey and curly… The curls wouldn’t bother me too much but I’m 27 and scared of having a full head of grey hair! Both woman were a bit older than me but does age make a difference? They were both blonde/light brown before but I don’t know if that makes a difference either?
I know this seems like a minor thing to worry about but would really appreciate anyone sharing their experience.
The first time mine grew back curly - really easy to look after but went back to limp and straight afterwards but stayed the same colour maybe a bit more grey or am I getting older
Thanks for starting this thread - I’ve just finished chemo and have been wondering the same thing. My 14 year old daughter keeps saying it’ll grow back a ginger affro and finds it hilarious, but considering it was a straight mousy brown originally, I can’t see that happening !
A friend of mine finished chemo a while back and its come back a browny/blonde colour, very very soft, with a bit of a kink it in. She tells me she had hair like a highland terrier before bc (I never knew her then), so she’s more than happy. She’s 42 - same age as me.
Mine grew back darker than before and was quite wavy for a while…after a few months went straight, different texture too…thicker…bit grey, but in places which were slightly grey before chemo…when i used to colour hair to cover it…decided not to colour when it came back.
I can remember this was always a ‘‘hot topic’’ of conversation in chemo out-paitents…with everyone wondering how their’s would come back.
My hair came back very very grey but after a few colours (and disasters)it is bk to normal. In the end I had to go to Tony and Guy because my local salons could not get the colour right! And now the roots that are coming through, they do not look too bad but then again it is just so lovely to have a head of hair again!!! LOL
Mine came back white and resembled an afro! In fact it looked like I had paid for a blue rinse and perm! Caused much joviality at my hairdresses. I finished chemo in November last year and it’s still like and afro now, except it’s coloured! It’s only really just strengthened up too, so I hope these curls may disappear soon??
I have been a blonde all my life, the hairs on my arms and eyebrows etc are coming back blonde but the hair on my head is brown, im gutted as i dont want to be a bottle blonde as i always used to wind my friends up with this and lovely my hair colour. its also very thick but think as it grows it wont be as thick.
Seems like it might be pot luck then! I am feeling a bit happier about it now, I went to see my hairdresser on Saturday (to get my wig trimmed to look more like my hair used to) and she said that even if it completely grey they can still colour it using a tint. Hurrah for that! x

I used to highlight my hair before I lost mine and when I shaved it off it as so dark. when it grew back it was not as dark but I am a brunette now and love the change. I have not returned to my blonde highlights! My hair is now curly/wavy, bit like Kylies to be honest. My hair used to be down to my waist and I loved it but now I have decided to keep it short. Its just hard getting the lengths all over the same, it takes time but hopefully by Christmas it will resemble a style! I just put wax on, mess it up and bit and hope for the best.
Mine started growing back November - December last year and it was silver whereas I was blond before. Then as it grew, it started to curl and is now tight ringlets and the silver has been replaced by silver and dark brown. I hated the curls, but now love them, and am faced with the dilemma of what to do now as the new hair is growing straight but still the same salt and pepper colour. Friends in the same hospital where I work have had their hair come back without grey when they had a lot before !
I think I just got all theirs. But hey, what do I care if the C stays away!
