Hair not growing back properly

Hello
My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2010. She underwent chemo straight away for several months and lost all her hair then had a mastectomy in May 2011. She then underwent radiotherapy until about autumn 2011. She takes tamoxifen now.

lately she has been getting very upset because her hair hasn’t grown back properly. It is very thin and frizzy and soft on the top, looking a bit bald, and seems to grow straight upwards, and then quite thick and frizzy but short at the back. It never gets any longer at the back It just seems to get bushier.

is it likely that it will ever grown back properly or will she have to accept it? Or are there any supplements she could take? I hate seeing her so upset, I’m just pleased that she is here!

Sorry to hear your mum is having on-going problems with her hair re-growth. Can I recommend that she contacts ‘Cancer hair care’? They are a charity local to me (Herts) and specialise in hair problems around chemo. They have a helpline and would be able to offer you some advice, I am sure. Sorry you mum is having problems with hair not growing properly, maybe she could speak to her BCN to see if she has any suggestions your mum could take.
