Happy New Year - Any Resolutions?

Hi all!! I just wanted to wish you all a happy new year and thank you all! Since I was diagnosed in October I’ve posted quite alot on here and you’ve all pulled me through some of the darkest days I’ve ever experienced!! I’ve now had my lumpectomy on 16th December, recovering well, back to work (the joys of being self employed and having surgery during your busiest season ) and feeling much more positive!

Is anybody setting new goals or focusing on anything new for the new year? Whilst awaiting further results following surgery I’d quite like something to distract my mind. I am aiming to get back into the gym just for some light treadmill walking and once my girls go back to school/nursery next week will do some national trust walks (where we can walk more than 10 steps without hearing “I’m hungry” or “I’m tired”). I do also have a decent camera I bought last Christmas but never really got round to using it much so may start some photography projects/practise too (if anybody has any fund ideas with photography please let me know) I also wanted to learn crochet but never got round to it so maybe something else! I love yoga but think will be a little while before I can get full back into classes.

Any other ideas welcome!!

Hope you all have a fab night whatever you’re doing this NYE :tada: (I’ll be watching stranger things after our daughters have had a good run round the play centre this afternoon and they’ll probably crash at 7 )

Love to you all :heart::heart_hands:

Hi @katie91

Pleased you are feeling better even though you were chucked into being back at work. I used to be self employed so know that one!

What do you do? If you don’t mind sharing.

I don’t have set plans - but I never do for January.

Photography- can be overwhelming of where to start.

National trust is a great place to take your camera.

You could have themes. A colour you pick and then it’s a challenge to find the colour, a letter so anything starting with A and then the next time B , I love taking photos of mushrooms, bark textures, and robins.

Set a timer on your phone and a photo every xxx amount of minutes apart.

Oh high, medium ( your height) and low - of the same thing so point camera up, at eye level and then down. If you can. Same photo different perspective.

I hope that helps, but mostly have fun.

It sounds like you have a good few plans and ideas of things to challenge yourself with and enjoy learning.

Oh black and white photography and it’s your perspective so it isn’t right or wrong.

I forgot to add they were taken at a national trust place in autumn and where people would see a fallen tree struck by lightning. I found it growing a mushroom and it had such life in it still

My new year hop is that I can stay out of bed before 7pm!! Seems to be becoming a habit to be in bed very early🤣 Happy New Year all! Xx

My New Year’s resolution is to not let the opinions of others stop me doing things I want to do. Or keep me doing things I don’t want to do. Take that, other people!

Thanks for lots of ideas @hen!! Love those pictures  are you quite into photography? I love finding mushrooms and am still trying to find some red ones! I thought it might have been a national trust.

Ahh you know what self employed life is like! No I don’t mind sharing at all, I’ve got a party business so we do igloo movie nights/sleepovers/tea parties and dinner parties, bouncy castles, soft play, inflatable night clubs, indoor sleepovers and Bell Tents! It’s very fun but lots of heavy lifting haha!!

Love the idea of shooting different eye levels/letters etc makes it sound very fun!

I no longer do the “I’m going to lose 2 stone” type new year things, physiologically I think we’re meant for comfort still in January not Lettuce leaves haha but this journey has certainly taught me to live softer and gentler and look after my mind just as much as my body

Oh same :joy: we’ve got to look after ourselves though and if that means bed by 7pm so be it

Hope you have a lovely new years day

Same!!! I’m so excited to watch it tonight once the kids are in bed :joy:

Thanks Katie. It definitely won’t be easy but what with the cancer and that New Year feeling, I’m finding that the YOLO force is currently strong in this one!

Wishing you a happy and healthy 2026 x

Hi @katie91

I am into photography- but I’m not into the technical aspects of it too much. I mostly shoot on aperture.

Finding the red mushrooms is magical. I like to try and tell story’s with my photos or imagine fairies have been. If you would like I can private message some photos and ideas. I’m an enthusiast not an expert.

I’d love to help you with the crochet, it’s my passion, it’s very relaxing and mindful. I crochet a lot for the Woolly Hugs charity who make the most beautiful blankets for anyone in need of one. Didn’t expect myself to be on the receiving end a few weeks ago

I’d love to teach you and maybe you could make a small Woolly Hugs square if you’d like to

Hey @grateful ahhh sorry to hear you ended up on the other side! How’s your journey been so far?

Oh yes pleaseee I would love any help you can give me!! I’ve got lots of hooks and one of my customers have me a huge bag or yarn so I’m really at the “all the gear, absolutely no idea” stage so I’ll gladly accept any help!! What a lovely thing to make too :heart_hands:

@katie91 my journey so far has been very good so far thank you. Diagnosis end of September after a routine mammogram, lumpectomy end of October. My lovely surgeon removed all the offending tissue with clear margins and no node involvement. I recovered really well, just with a small seroma and tiny amount of cording. Hence my name here.

Starting chemotherapy next week as belt and braces then will come radiotherapy with bisphosphonates thrown in for good measure and I’m terrified but then I was terrified about the surgery and it was fine.

Start off with a 5 or 6mm hook if you have one and some thick yarn - aran weight if you have it so that you can see the stitches easily then look on YouTube for Bella Coco and try her beginners granny square. If you need me, tag me.
