Has anyone one else Had their recon at Selly Oak in Birmingham ?

i am due to go in on 10th july for my Diep on the 11th.

Just wondered what the hospital’s like ?
as i’ve had all my treatment at New Cross in Wolverhampton,
but my surgeon does Diep with a plastic surgeon at Selly Oak
as she says the nurse specialist team are there.

S O H Dear Kim

I had my lat dorsi reconstruction done at QE rather than Selly Oak because of theatre availability, although the plastic surgeon - is it Miss Waters? She is very approachable and understanding - more usually operates at S O H. However, I went to the Selly Oak burns and plastics clinic for quite a while afterwards, and this is right next to the plastics ward. I subsequently had day surgery for nipple reconstruction at S O, and then had nipple/areola tattooing done by one of the specialist nurses. I have never experienced anything other than great care and kindness from all the nursing and drs in the plastics team.
Hope this helps a little, and hope all goes well for your reconstruction.

Thank you , yes it is Miss Waters who will be doing my diep,
along with mrs matey.

Its good to hear that the care was good, as not knowing the hospital makes me a little nervous.

my admission letters says i’ll be the a D ward, not sure if thats a general ward or plastics.

Hi Kim
I think there are two or three D wards which lie in a newer wing of the hospital. I have an idea they may be shortish-stay general surgery wards. I had my nipple reconstruction done on D3, the day ward, which was lovely.
When are you going for your pre-med visit? At least you’ll get an opportunity to have a look round then.

I have to go for my pre-med visit next wednesday 27th,
and like you say i hope to have a look at ward then.

i’ve just checked my letter i’m to go in D4.

I have started buying my hospital stuff, after printing off a great list from the other breast cancer forum.

I have been pricing portable DVD players to take with me,
but i thought seems as i have my admission letter with the ward telephone number on, i would double check as to if they have had the overbed tvs installed yet.
And the good news is yes they have , so i will save myself the money of buying a DVD player.

best wishes for tomorrow That’s good news about the tvs. We had tv room at end of ward in QE , but it was like a greenhouse, and seats were wipe-down plastic - rather uncomfortable and sweaty in summer. Mind you, couldn’t concentrate on anything longer or more demanding than Emmerdale. Actually, a lot of the time just watching what was going on in the ward was like watching tv…I don’t remember being bored!

i had a call from miss waters secertary today,
my op has been brought forward to 4th july instead of 11th.

so its alot closer now, and i’m very nervous.

Ooops thanks for the excitement but i am a fraud i dont need it.

i had a phone call on friday to tell me my diep has been cancelled,
the reason is my heart has been found to have a leaking valve it was picked up on my echo,
the anethetist [sorry cant spell that !] said he was unwilling to put me to sleep till i have my heart checked
by a cardio dr.
i am to see the heart dr tomorrow, so wish me luck.
