Hats / Scarves / Buffs / Wigs

Hi all,

I picked up a tip from one thread about ‘HotHair’ for wigs but just wondered if anyone has any particular tips or recommendations for other headwear sites or outlets.

Many thanks xx Chris xx

I’ve booked myself on a Headstrong session, which is provided by BCC. Do a search on the site and you’ll find a list of places where it’s available. I can’t honestly see myself wearing a hamster terribly often and it’ll probably be kept for “best”, so hats, scarves, etc are likely to be headwear of choice.

Get a Buff; comfortable, easy to pull on and off, doesn’t slip off your head, keeps falling hair under control…

I cold capped very successfully and kept 90% of my hair but wore a Buff when I couldn’t wash it for ages. Sure lots of people who decided not to cold cap will agree that it’s a good solution  xxx

Another tip - remember your head may well get cold at night, so a comfortable hat or buff that you can sleep in is a good idea.

Chris - I used Suburban Turban online. I know it sounds like an unpromising name - but they have a good range of stylish headwear. Bit expensive I would have said, but i like the little, soft gathered hats with a brim at the front. They give you a bit of ‘height.’
Good luck,
Tracey

Donna, I’m sure that Blacks outdoor shop sell Buffs. They come on a cardboard backing though so I’m not sure if you could try one, but they might have one loose that you could have a go with.

Tracey, I’ve had a look at Suburban Turban ( suburbanturban.co.uk/ ) as well - they have some really nice things on there and I’ll probably get one at some point, but tthey are a bit dear! They have some really easy to follow turban tying instructions that work a treat - the link is on the “Scarves” page.

You could also have a look at Bold Beanies ( boldbeanies.co.uk/index.html ) for soft, colourful beanie hats and also Bohemia (bohemia-fashions.co.uk/ ). Our chemo unit sells the Bohemia hats and have some to try. They say they’re cheaper than the website but I haven’t actually checked the prices yet.

Another one is Annabandana ( annabandana.co.uk/ ) for ready tied scarves with elasticated backs. I’ve got one from there and it was cheap but the fabric’s a bit thin so I’ll probably wear it over a thin jersey sleep hat.

Yet another - Scarf Hut ( scarfhut.co.uk/index.html ) but I haven’t really looked at that yet.

My hair is falling out so fast now I really need to start wearing something - I need to wash it this morning and I think there’s be more bald areas than hair left by the time I’m done!

Hi there.

Good luck with your hairwash Alto. I left my hair as long as possible before I washed it, got so angry cos kept finding hair EVERYWHERE even in a chocolate cake I’d made, that when it did all fall out (in one go in the shower) I felt relieved. Relieved that this part of the BC lark was done and dusted and I could tick it off the list.

minimunchkin - Surburban Turban do have some lovely scarves and headwear but they are a bit pricey. I’ve got one which is VERY VERY comfortable which I wear around the house. I am not brave enough to wear headscarves in the real world so I wear my wig, which I have to say I am very happy with and find it comfortable and not too itchy. Always glad to take it off at the end of the day though - like a new pair of shoes!

Annabandana is great too - very cheap.

Hope this helps

Got myself a huge range of scarves but yesterday visited LongForHair in Didcot, Oxfordshire - absolutely fantastic lady who is a very highly trained wig consultant. The one I’ve got is ‘wow’! Just so impressed and actually looking forward to wearing it, in a weird and subversive way…

Hi
I had a lovely wig, but used lots of scarves from the theindiashop.co.uk they were really inexpensive and I bought a dozen in lots of colours and co-ordinated them with my clothes. They come with scarf tying instructions and co-ordinating silk strips. I found the plain ones were easiest to wear and often wound 2 together. It seems fiddly to start with, but you will soon find yourself putting them on without a mirror. I got lots of compliments and still wear them sometimes even though I have hair now.

Another useful link is hats4heads.co.uk

This company was set up by 2 sisters after one of them lost her hair due to chemotherapy, and they stock a wide range of hats, bandanas, buffs etc. They also have a special offer each month.
