Hello!!
Hats…where to start?? I have looked at numerous web sites but am wondering if ‘high street’ hats are OK? Do they cover enough or do I need special ones.
Had 1st TAC 12 days ago and ,after reading the site, am aware my ‘hairy days’ are limited - so retail therapy on Monday sounds good. Thanks for any help!

Hi Sadie
I lost my hair to chemo after about 16/17 days. I found that you had to be careful with high street hats because as you have realised they do not always cover everything you want covered. One of my favourites this winter has been a pull on hat from Accesorize. I did get a wig from one of the high street stores which once I had got my head around wearing a wig has been perfect, my main head covering has been scarves. I prefered longer ones which I tied into a sort of turban with a long piece left loose to kid myself it was more feminine. I also wore little skull caps with a scarf tied round into a knot at the side.
Indoors if I couldn’t be bothered I wore buffs(put it into google)
Hope this is of some help
Andie
Hi Sadie
I’m two weeks since losing the hair. You just need to shop around on the High Street front. For best coverage you need hats that come down most of the way over your ears, and that way they should come down far enough at the back too. You want the hat to feel like it’s hugging the base of your skull. Soft winter hats are pretty good still. Remember if you buy a hat a little bigger than you need you can have a scarf tied under it too. For scarves I’d go with scarves that are at least 30 inches square, bigger if you can get them, and that way you get enough to have the ends so you can bring them back up round your head again. Cotton ones stay on better than slippy materials like polyester or silk, although if you went online you can find pre-tied scarves in silk that look great and stay on well.
It’s worth googling. Try googling for wigs. A lot of the wig sites do hats and scarves for hair loss too.
I found Baker Boy caps were good, as they come down low - unlike baseball types. Also in summer I wore Audrey Hepburn style “bucket” hats (from Accessorize) - very attractive and drew lots of compliments!
Mostly I wore my wig usually with a scarf tied round bandeau style in a colour to match whatever outfit I wore. I felt it looked less wiggy and the scarf/headband gave me a feeling of security.
At night (it’s cold at night without hair), and around the house I wore Buffs
I lost my hair 11 days after I started FEC chemo, but it started to return as soon as I switched to Taxotere. All this was 18 months or so ago, and as you can see from my pic, I have a pretty good head of hair now.
Best wishes for your treatment
