have you seen latest news report vitamin D?
have you seen latest news report vitamin D? hi everyone i was reading my local gazette today and there was a article about vitamin D , its only small so ill tell you what it says. experts have found more evidence that vitamin D can help fight breast cancer, according to a study published today.researchers from imperial college london have found that women with advanced breast cancer had lower levels of vitamin D than those in the early stages of the disease.that adds to the evidence that low vitamin D levels plays a role in the progression of the cancer, the scientists said. they now hope their study might lead to better treatments for breast cancer patients- possibly by keeping vitamin D levels high. i thought this was really interesting and i am now scouring the net to find out information on vit D , see what foods etc that its in, and i think ill go to health shops for some info and maybe get some vit D pills. take care xxx suzee
Correlations prove nothing Many correlations turn out to be pure flukes. Other times, the researchers explanation for the correlation is flawed.
Did they provide any indication of the strength of the correlation?
There are alternative explanations for a correlation between low levels of Vitamin D and having advanced breast cancer. One of these, is that those who get secondaries, frequently have bone metastases and are on bisphosphonates (to strengthen their bones, give pain-relief and adjust calcium levels in the blood). Sometimes, the bisphosponates mop up too much calcium in the blood and in the process, can reduce associated vitamin D. For this reason, those on bisphosphonates are often prescribed Adcal tablets (a calcium supplement with vitamin D) to offset this undesirable effect…
So, I’d certainly want to know if the vitamin D levels of these women with advanced breast cancer, were obtained before or after bisphosphonate treatment.
Another possibly flippant explanation (do excuse me) for low vitamin D among those with advanced breast cancer, could be that they feel to ill to get out in the sunshine - you can always come up with an alternative explanation. As I’m in that group, please allow me the odd joke.
It is important for those whose advanced breast cancer includes bone metastases, to ensure they have enough calcium and vitamin D in their diet and those is one of the reasons why I do not support going dairy-free.
More than just one study, though A number of studies have pointed to a correlation between high levels of vitamin D and a lower incidence of breast cancer. It is true that correlation is not causation, but there are plausible causal links and vitamin D promotes cancer cell death in some breast cancer cell lines in the lab.
Whether vitamin D affects survival is something that nobody knows for sure yet.
Vitamin D is good for the bones and breast cancer patients have a higher rate of osteoporosis (even if they have only had surgery, so it may be the cancer itself that is the problem), so it might be worth a try.
However, if you’re in treatment, you should sure that it is ok with your doctor.
better calcium metabolism without milk Hi, Holey. I hope the following link works - it contains some convincing reasons why Dairy is a dangerous and unwholesome and ineffective way of getting the calcium your bones need, whether from bone secondaries per se or from osteoporotic conditions of any origin. vmine.net/cancersupportinternational/foodfactor1.asp
If the link doesn’t work, let me know.
There are many other healthy and more available sources of both calcium and vit. D for human consumption. Cows’ milk is strictly for juvenile, suckling bovines!
Sadly it has been so adulterated progressively by intensive farming methods in the last 60 years, (I used to be a farmworker on a dairy farm and am an agricultural research scientist so I know it’s true) that any general health benefits there might have been before then have been far outweighed by the risks of cancer from drinking milk from modern dairy herds.
Most dietary causes of degenerative disease such as cancer, diabetes, and some other auto-immune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis don’t show up for at least the first 30 years of consumption.
Check it out? You seem the sort of person who pays attention to detail and is careful to sift information so I’ll be interested to hear what you think about this.
