Having trouble sleeping

Hello everyone, Anyone else having trouble with sleeping? I find I can go to sleep OK, but regularly wake between 4.30 and 5.30. I am 2 months post surgery for DCIS and on 10 of 15 rads. Anyone got any suggestions?
Jojo

I have had a disturbed sleep pattern since I was on chemo, think it might be a hangover from the steroids. I tried everything, herbal stuff, lavender, camomile tea and moving into the spare room, but I was still waking at 3.20 am. My GP has given me Tamazepam for 2 weeks only but he has said to stop them after a week if I am sleeping OK as they can be addictive.

Hi

I too have needed sleeping tablets or I wouldnt have been able to get thro all this. Am now started back to gym and work on rehab programme so have managed to start weaning myself.

Its a nightmare not being able to sleep - i still wake during night but get back to sleep again

Sweet dreams to all

Yep, I wake up at around 5.30am every day - but this is an improvement over the last few weeks, when I couldn’t even get to sleep in the first place. I just do my best to snooze until it’s time to get up, and don’t let it worry me. I’ve got sleeping pills if I get really desperate, but have only used them once so far (touch wood!)

I couldn’t sleep for ages and got used to hearing the dawn chorus every day. I’ve never been a great sleeper especially not under stress. As I was going through treatment it wasn’t too much of a problem but going back to work it can be worse. I don’t have any problem sleeping now, it’s about four years since I was going through it though.

Hi all

I hav completely the opposite problem - can never get to sleep and end up like tonight- still up at 2.15 am - then I oversleep in the morning and have to rush about getting yougest out to school on time!

I haven’t slept through the night since my mastectomy last March. I regularly wake twice, firstly around 2 or 3am and then again around 5am. I’ve stopped worrying about it as I usually go back to sleep quite quickly.

Hi all,
Just shows what a stress it is. Jojo, I am 6 weeks post mastectomy for DCIS and still have terrible sleep. I actually went the WHOLE NIGHT without sleep last week. I think it is about trying to cope with the shock of dx. You cope and all and then things get back to normal but somehow subconsciously your mind is still ticking over the whole thing, even if you feel you are over it or doing well or whatever…

Hope you get some sleep soon!

i just can’t seem to get my mind to close down since dx last june, think they call it “intrusive thoughts” i take sleeping pills every couple of nights just to make sure i get some sleep, otherwise i get about 1-2 hours

I hadn’t slept for weeks and weeks, took a couple of Nytol herbal sleeping tablets and had a great nights sleep. Might be worth a try if you don’t want to take prescribed sleeping tablets.

Sleep? What’s that? I have had terrible trouble getting to sleep and waking up - but now 7 months after my dx I find I can get back to sleep quite quickly. I still hate that moment of switching the light out though. The best thing I’ve found is a ‘mindful meditation’ cd from The Haven which usually works wonders. You are not supposed to fall asleep while doing it but I usually just conk out about half way through! I also find listening to this during the day if I’m feeling anxious very helpful too. If I’m desperate I take half a nytol which is not as strong as the prescribed pills and works quite well.

Lets all go bananas, literally!!! Forgot about this until my friend told me last night she isn’t sleeping, I told her to have a banana before bed and she emailed me this morning to say thanks, said she slept great. Must try this again myself tonight.

Sweet dreams everyone!

hi all
Everynight when getting ready for bed I feel like I’m getting ready for a night shift.Used to love going to bed at the end of a hard day but that was before dx last October. I found nytol gave me headaches, tried reading but can’t be bothered with books anymore, i actually find coming on here helps just before I go to bed It reminds me others understand and seems to calm me.

I’ll try the banana tonight!

I am the same, wake up around 2 & 5, sometimes more. Am now post chemo, mastectomy & rads, but on Tamoxifen… think this might be contributing towards not sleeping certainly the hot flushes dont help. Are you other ladies with sleep problems on Tamoxifen? Roadrunner, you seem to be awake at the same times as me… will send you some sleepy vibes !! oh, and I hate bananas! Any thing else worth trying?

Hello Ladies,
I will certaily try bananas - and in the meantime have a laugh on me! I went back to work yesterday and when I got home about 5 I thought I’ll just sit for a little before thinking about supper. I fell asleep straight away and only woke at ten when someone phoned! So that was me done for the rest of the night. Wish me better luck tonight!

So the secret is getting back to work! Better try that soon!

Hi ladies,I’m trying good old fashioned malted milk drinks like Horlicks or Ovaltine just before going to bed. They seem to help me get off to sleep quickly, but I still wake up early like you all seem to be doing too.
