health insurance, e1 11 advice

hi all im thinking of going to spain this yr chemo permiting can any one advise on the best ins to go through and what are the rules on e1 11 never had to use it and as on chemo unsure what the best way to go i know ins can be very dear so might chance the e1 11 but dont know the rules bla bla any advice thanks laura

Laura,

The E111 is out of date - you need an EHIC card. They are free and you apply to get them from DWP. You then get the equivalent of NHS treatment not private and obviously with it not being insurance it doesn’t cover cancellation/loss of baggage, passport etc. Check out the official govt website - don’t use one that says they will apply for you and charge for it! The service is very quick.

I have secondaries in my bones and my OH has issues with blood pressure/mini-strokes etc so insurance realistically is a no-no for us but as we travel to Europe, it’s not a major issue in our opinion. We just wouldn’t go if we thought either of us weren’t up to it. Indeed, docs have said a holiday will do us more good than not having one - any excuse, me!!! Plus, we tend to do trips where we book flights and hotels separately and the hotels where payt is made at end of the stay! Even with ins, they often stipulate you have to go to a state/NHS equivalent hospital first and not just straight to a private place.

We’re off to Mallorca soonish and then Paris and have been to both places several times before and not encountered any problems.

Enjoy your hols wherever you go !!!
