heard the surgeon say cancer

i had an operation under local on monday to remove a milk duct that has been leaking a lot of yellowy bloody fluid for about 9 months. took that long to get to this stage. gp initially said ‘it’s hormonal’. then maybe after 4 months got referal for gyne scan for other ‘hormonal?’ problems, eventually saw them a couple of months ago and they said ‘it’s not hormonal’. went to breast clinic. they said needed op to take it out.

finally had op this week, under local, because i’m pregnant. And I amongst the mostly silence I heard the sugeon whisper to his assistant ‘cancer’ and she went ‘mmmm’. Perhaps he momentarily forgot I was awake. I got my follow up appt letter the next day and seeing him next week. Very nervous.

How horrible for you. Can I suggest you give the Helpline a ring? They’re very good for offloading to.

Even if that’s what it turns out to be, there are a good few ladies on here who were diagnosed while pregnant, so I’m sure they’ll be along to hold your hand while you wait for your results.

Best of luck,

CM

Mummyotter - that’s really awful! What a thing to overhear and how silly of them to not be aware of you perhaps overhearing that too!!
I don’t know what else to say really, I’m just mortified for you and I can’t imagine the worry that you really don’t need whilst you’re pregnant. xxx

How insensitive! BUT you don’t know what they were saying for sure and they wouldn’t know until it was tested. Did the surgeon not talk to you after the op?

If it IS cancer, then it’s jolly good that it’s all removed and most are very treatable nowadays. This is a really helpful forum so keep in touch with any questions you may have. And as CM said, there are a few ladies on here who are pregnant and many who were pregnant when they were diagnosed.

Keeping fingers crossed that everything’s OK.

i cannot believe that an experinced surgeon in this day and age would be so careless with his remarks, if he saw something that he thought was cancer, warning bells would have gone off in his head and surely he would have been professional enough not to make random utterances. Are you sure you did not mishear him??

there are lots of reasons for nipple discharge. Only 5-15% of them are cancer. That means 85-95% of people with discoloured discharges do not have cancer.

It going to be a horrid weak waiting for the results, very emotional. Do come back on to ask questions or to get a cyber hug

Thank God. It’s all clear. Nothing. Not even pre-cancerous cells. I was so freaked out after hearing the ‘c’ word. Perhaps he thought it looked like it, but biopsy says no.

Panic totally over. Thanks you for your kind words of support in my mini crisis.

how fantastic is that … great news xx

soooooooo pleased for you! xx

great news, thanks for letting us know

Hurray! Let’s hope he learns to be a bit more careful in future.

Now you go and celebrate.

So glad your results were good, mummy otter. Reminds me of when I was waiting in the consulting room for results of a CT scan following a regional recurrence. I heard the consultant and the bcn talking in the next room and clearly heard them discussing results which showed cancer. I was in bits and in tears when they finally came in - and they said that my CT results were clear, they had been discussing somebody else. I was so angry, and couldn’t stop crying … they said that they had no idea that someone in the next room could hear them. When we’re in that situation we are so very vulnerable, and it is so important for the professionals to take care over what they say.
