Heart concerns

Since chemo in Autumn 2024, 4 surgeries in past 12 months and letrazole started 2 montths ago, I’ve noticed my resting heart rate has rocketed from 64 before cancer to 78 after cancer.

I’ve been going to the gym 3x a week and doing the short runs or hikes 2x a week, but my heart rate is taking ages to recover. My blood pressure is normal around 110/75. I’m scared my heart is damaged. Obviously I’ll see my gp, but I wondered if my sudden inccrease in exercise was to blame, or could letrazole be having an adverse effect on me.

Thank you

Hi bluesatsuma

Thanks for posting.

Letrozole can cause an increase in heart rate but the heart rate of 78 is still within the normal range. Your heart rate will also increase with exercise and the time it takes to go back to your normal or resting rate will vary from person to person.

It’s not clear if you have any symptoms with this or it’s just something you are tracking through a fitness app or watch. Heart health is assessed prior to chemotherapy starting, and heart function tests may be recommended. It’s likely your heart rate and blood pressure were also checked when you were having chemo.

As you have concerns do speak to your GP as you plan to do or your treatment team. Hopefully they can reassure you that this change is not of concern or recommend further investigations if necessary
