Hello..what to expect..

Hello everyone,
don’t really want to be here but then I guess who does!
I went to my GP because I was having nipple discharge (thick black gunge at the time, which then turned red then a cream coffee colour as time went on), I also had a lump and considerable pain. After a long wait (3 months) I was eventually seen at the breast clinic. My mammogram showed abonormalities so I was then scanned (ultrasound) and this showed numerous cysts in both breasts (they lost count and stopped looking after they found 12 on 1 side alone!) I was then sent away told to take evening primrose oil for the pain and send in a nipple smear and come back in 3-4 weeks.
Well that was yesterday. I was greeted by the Dr saying ‘so you’ve had your operation then!’ This was before the door had closed and I had sat down! To which I replied ‘what operation?’ He then back tracked to say ‘oh you are the one we discussed in a meeting yesterday - right, the smears showed red blood cells and other abnormalities, we are going to do a Hadfields operation!’ That was as much as he said. To say he had poor bedside manner would be an understatement! With prompting by me asking questions he has told me they will cut around the nipple area, remove the ducts and then sew the nipple back on, this tissue would then be sent for further analysis at the lab. He explained that because they have to cut through blood supply and nerves I could loose sensation and my nipple could turn black! He wants to do it urgently which he said would be in the next 2-3 weeks. I have had a phone call this morning to go for a pre-op assessment on Monday! Everything seems to be moving at ultra quick speed now which I am finding more worrying than my symtoms.
Another thing…When I saw a printed email on his desk with my name on and the cytology report I asked to read it which he replied with…“its your life but it probably won’t make any sense to you”! The bloody cheek! I told him I have a degree in medical microbiology which shut him up! How dare he assume!

My mind is on breast cancer over time! My mum was diagnosed at 48 (I’m 38). This is just freaking me out! They are doing the op as a day case. How much pain will I be in? How much scarring will I have? Will this make me lop-sidded? Has anyone else had this done? How long will I need off work? I am a behaviour worker at a very difficult primary school which involves a lot of physical contact and restraining children regularly, I get kicked and punched on a regular basis! Sorry to bombard you all with questions, didn’t think of them yesterday when I was there only throughout my sleepless night.
Hope to hear from you soon I have been reading a few posts and feel this is the place for support and answers. Thank you in advance

Diddy - I’m sorry that you are going through this and feel so worried. I can’t help with your questions myself as I haven’t experienced your symptoms but I do recommend ringing the helpline number for this site. You can speak to a really experienced nurse. I have done this a couple of times and found it very useful.

All the very best

Anne

Hi Diddy,

What a horrible experience. I am so sorry. Like Anne, I can’t answer your questions but I am sure someone else can.

Thinking of you.

hi im really nervous about telling anyone this but i have found several small lumps on my breast and i am losing blood from my nipple, i have also lost a considerable amount of weight without dieting lately and i feel terrible what should i do???

Hi Sabrina

You need to go to the docs first thing Monday morning and get yourself checked out. I have no idea whether it is bc or not, but you need to know. Not all lumps are bad news, as there have been a lot of ladies on here whos lumps have been cysts. So lets hope yours are the too.

I had one big lump I found which hurt a little, but others on here might be able to give you more help and advice. Just ring the doctors on Monday first thing. Let us know how you get on.

Take care

Hi Sabrina

Sorry things don’t sound too good from your docs, but reading your posts, they have not said it is bc yet. So we will all keep everything crossed for you. You must let us know how you get on on Friday with your tests and also on Saturday at the hospital.

It is normal to feel very scared, as we all do I think, especially when waiting for tests and results. We are all here for you whenever you want to talk, and post as much as you like, as you will find heaps of support.

Let us know how you get on.

Take care
