Did the big mistake of looking online for holidays yesterday, which culminated in finding the perfect holiday to Cuba in July, and its being held for us until 12.30pm today.
I’m due to have my reconstruction in April, and am currently on herceptin. My herceptin would be due the second week we would be away, which means delaying it for just a week. I’m not too bothered about this, as I’ve read a thread which some other ladies mentioned that its okay to delay it just for a week.
BUT, I have some other questions:
Do the vaccines we have to have for Cuba affect the herceptin in any way ?
Will my new implanted boobs be ok on a 10 hour flight ? (don’t laugh, I’m serious!)
Anything else I need to worry about ?
I know this all seems trivial probably, but I had such a shi**y year last year and am so looking forward to getting away this year. What do you think, shall I book it ???
Your questions are not at all trivial, and it’s worth contacting your medical team for advice before you book as they will check out the vaccine situation and be able to organise your treatments around the holiday if this is appropriate.
Hi Julie,
I would just throw caution to the wind and book the holiday! I had a mastectomy and reconstruction in July last year, finished my radiotherapy in November and booked a holiday in Barbados in December. I am triple negative, so no herceptine and like Kelley said, found it difficult to get insurance due to the fact that it wasnt 3 months after treatment. In the end I got a policy for myself and didnt declare my cancer and got a separate policy for husband and children so that should my insurance be invalidated in any way it wouldnt affect theirs. It was a risk I took and thankfully it paid off, but my way of thinking was that cancer will not kill me within 2 weeks on holiday and I was most likely to need it for stolen luggage etc and worst case scenario, we could claim on my husbands policy. Barbados also has reciprical hospital arrangements with the UK, so they would treat us for free at their hospitals anyway. I read online whether injections were necessary and they were only recommended, not compulsary so I did not have them either. We had a great time and I never regretted booking it once- my view was the same as yours- we all had such a crap year, we deserved it- I reckon you should just book it and enjoy! life’s too short!
Best of luck whatever you decide

Not quite in the same boat as you, but finished chemo on 21 Nov and started herceptin on 20 Dec and have had 3 now. I am off to Florida on 30 March for 2 weeks to disneyland with my two little babies. Go for it, although would check out the vacinations. If you want holiday insurance try Aberdeen Insurance. I got mine through them and I have liver mets too. The cost was £69 for family of 4, with standard £65 excess, but anything happened with regards to my cancer the excess would be £750. But I thought that was a great quote. Let me know if you want the number, or do an advanced search for aberdeen.
Hope you book and have a fantastic time. It is great having something to look forward to believe me.
Not heard anything about this, but I rang January. Hope this is not the case as could only get a single trip insurance at the mo and wanna go away again in August and October. I am planning to do loads after last year.
If someone knows anymore about this, please let us know.
I had a mastectomy on the 21st Jan! Sasrt more chemo on the 27th Jan! But got so angry & upset that I would not be able to fly - so I have booked a 4 day trip to Spain to see my parents new Home! SO I am hoping that I have done the right thing! As for insurance no one will touch me! So sorry to say its just me my hand luggage & my E1 11!
I think seeking advice is a good idea but the decision is down to you!
Thanks for your advice. Mel, you’re right, its already booked !!! Checked with my Oncology Team and they’re happy. Just hoping my reconstruction DOES go ahead in April. Cuba here we come…
Hi everyone, i have just recently taken out worldwide annual insurance for my husband and i for £65, with Aberdeen insurance, that is me covered for the breast cancer with excess of £750 and £65 excess for most other things, i just finished my treatment end of Sept 07. I phoned one day and received my policy the next. I think that was a great deal, considering what others were taking for a single trip. hope this helps. Happy holidays !!!
