I have had five sessions of fec and during this time my blood sugar level had risen last night it was 32.4 and I was taken into hospital. Now I am diagnosed with diabetes and fear that I may have to inject myself with insulin.
My consultant thinks that the chemo is the cause of this, my gp says that I am diabetic and has given me meds and refered me to a clinic.
I don’t know what to think. I feel so very ill. Unable to stand for any length of time. I give everything to seeing the cancer treatment through and don’t feel that I have anything left to fight off another disease.
Has this happened to anyone else? and if the chemo has caused it how long before I get back to feeling anything like normal. I have been taken off steroids as this may have caused the problem .
Hi’ I am diabetic and have been for 23 years.I inject insulin 4 times a day, some times more. I had problems with high blood sugars when on chemo and was told it was due to steroids, so I adjusted my insulin. Chemo is bad enough and can make you feel lousy, but diabetes can also make you feel very ill when not treated. I know it is hard to come to terms with cancer and then be told you may be diabetic, but you will feel better (if you are diabetic) once you get your treatment sorted. Good luck and best wishes, Jan
hi naunamh
I am not diabetic but I know what it’s like to be “happily” (if you know what I mean) fighting cancer and then feel very very ill - mine was due to low neutrofils but I felt so ill i can’t tell you
although you don’t know what to think i wouldn’t even try and think yet - the point is that when you fell very ill it’s impossible to think and just trying makes you fell worse cos you’re not up to it
focus on resting and feeling better and once you are feeling physically better your mind wil be working better and you’ll be able to get your head round everything
hopefully now they know what’s wrong with you you will be feeling much better very soon
good luck and hope you rest, don’t worry and wish you a speedy recovery

Thank you so much for answering and for the hope that you conveyed. I am taking note that the treatment will sort me and I WILL begin to feel better physically and mentally.
It all seems so much.
I have decided just to rest for a while and let others take the strain (not the norm for me) then I hope my battered fighting spirit will return.
