HELP - OP CANCELLED - CHEST SCAN PROBLEM

Hi Girls

I need some help. I have just been called by the hospital. I was told that my mast op is cancelled tomorrow. The reason is that my chest scan, part of my pre-op is showing a 7mm abnormality on the left lung.

I have pagets (nipple) in the left breast.
Has this happened to anyone?

Lisa

really sorry to hear that Lisa - am just bumping you back to the top as you are a long way down the list - hope you get someinfo soon big hug love FB xxxx

hi Lisa - you must be besides yourself. Did they ask you to go in to discuss it?? Abnormalities on chest xray can be due to a whole host of things - scarring from disease (eg TB) chest infection (did you have a cough at the time?) asthma amongst them. The anaesthetist needs to ensure that your chest is healthy and able to take anaesthetic before they give you one…
Thinking of you!

I think that they are more concerned it may be secondary c. I have never had a day off in over 10 years - I just dont get ill!

My bloods were ok - so there wasnt an infection.

Im scared - yesterday I had bc which was my nightmare. Today, I may have secondary. All in 6 weeks.

What shocked me also was that they told me they normally do a chest xray with a mammo - which I didnt have!
I have already asked about further scans and secondaries and was told that I would not be as healthy if there were any.

They are trying to get me a CT scan tomorrow - but dont think they can fit me in, with quick turnaround on results.
This is too much to cope with now… If I cry, I wont stop.

Ruby

I had a 5mm nodule in my lung at dx it was picked up by a ct scan. It turned out to be what they think was a localised infection, i was initially convinced it was secondaries. I know it’s hard but don’t jump to conclusions wait and see what the ct brings. Remember we are here for good news and bad

Well, I did question the nurse - she was lovely. She called me at about 4:30 and I was there in half an hour, and didnt leave until after 6.
The problem is, wouldnt my bloods show up an infection. I specfically asked that and she checked - all my blood tests were normal. I would have thought I would have raised white blood count.

D’you know, listening to all the anxieties that come out on this site has made me really pleased that in my job I am very clear and specific with my patients. I think that occasionally I start anxieties in people by giving them a little more info - eg they think things are fine and I put that element of doubt in there, but what I don’t do is lead them on in any way - it is good to know what you’re dealing with.
My first thought when I read your first post was - ‘infection, scarring, anaesthetic difficulties’ not ‘secondaries’. Hope all comes clear today!

Hi Ladies
My bcn has just called - I have CT scan at 2 today, but need to be in to drink ‘the stuff’’ at 1:30.

Td - I dont think that the person giving me the information is at wrong here or causing the anxiety - its the fact that I am pushing for answers or professional opinions, and all they will say is ‘We hope so, Lisa’.
… but because we have a primary cancer we need to check. I am pushing them, asking the same questions over and over.
Because I have never had anything that could scar my lungs - I cant help but think this is the worst news.

Lisa

Hi,
what a state you must be in with this worry, but as others have said it maynot be a secondary but one of the other more ‘‘innocent’’ things mentioned.
Hope you get things cleared today.
Take care

Hi Ruby1966

Just to reassure you a little, I know of another lady on this website who also had something on her lungs like you (which was picked up prior to chemo). She was told that they would leave it and see what happened to it after chemo. It ended up just being a lesion which is quite common and also as mentioned above, it can be scarring. I had a lesion on my liver and was going to have a biopsy on it. It was picked up prior to chemo too. In the end, they decided they didn’t think it was anything to do with cancer and it was just a collection of blood vessels, which is also quite common. When I finished chemo, they re scanned me and it was still there - which was good because it meant it hadn’t responded to chemo and therefore it was not cancerous. The worrying is so awful though and I really feel for you.

Thinking of you for today.
Big hugs

Hi Ruby

Thanks for your reply - it good to hear good-news stories to help allay the worry!
I was hoping not to have to need the chemo. I have pagets (nipple cancer) and is (or was) believe to be localised and not have reached the nodes yet.
however, this has just thrown everything sky-high!

If the only way to find out what is it is to chemo it, that will delay my surgery, and have unnecessary chemo as well.
What a mess!

I know I am so negative at the moment, but bad news after bad is demoralising !!! Sorry for moaning so much!

Lisa

Lisa, just sending you hugs. Hope everything goes well with your scan this afternoon. MegX

Good luck Lisa this afternoon

Hi again Lisa

Good luck for this afternoon. I hope you won’t have to have chemo and they wouldn’t give it to you unless there was a real need. By doing further investigations, they should be able to find out what it is and like I said above, hopefully it’s just scarring.

Please do let us know how you got on.

Big hugs

Hi Lisa,

I meant to reply yesterday but somehow never got round to it. Like you I had a 5mm lesion on my lung after my mastectomy and 4 positive lymph nodes found. I had a CT scan though. This was 15 months ago and I believed my team when they said the odds are that it is nothing to worry about… I am having a follow up CT scan next week though just to be sure, there are plenty of other women who have had similar and I know that hearing from them has put my mind at rest, whilst it is a possibility for me, it is only a small possibility.

I really hope your results are good today. I am thinking of you.

Take care

Hi Girls
I have my scan this afternoon. The stuff they give you to drink wasnt as bad as I imagined. I thought it would be flowing blue or something - but it was sort of orangey and milky.
Didnt know I had to have an injection though! Uch.
Anyway, they are trying to turn the result around quickly for me - tomorrow.

Hi Polly - thanks for letting me know about your experience. Did you have chemo also, or only a mastectomy ?
I hope your scan is ok too. xx

hi,1966ruby
hope you get good results tomorrow…do let us know.

Hi Ruby,

I had a mastectomy because a 13mm lump was initially found behind my nipple, boobs too small to do a lumpectomy! Histology showed it was a grade 2 lump and a node biopsy showed that of 6 lymph nodes removed 4 had cancer. In my hosp this triggered scans, so I had a CT scan lung and liver and bone scan. It was the ct scan which found the 5mm lesion. My team carried on with what they were thinking of doing which was basically 3 x FEC, 3 x Tax, 25 rads and 12 months Herceptin and on Tamoxifen, as my onc said belts and braces and another belt! My cancer was er positive and Her2 positive. My surgeon said that the treatment would be the same whether the 5mm nodule was secondaries or not.

It was very worrying but I can tell you that I have had contact from so many women who have a solitary lesion like ours who have since found it is nothing to worry about, I was told that it was much more common if secondary spread in lungs to have more than one and smaller lesions.

Anyway, next week I will find out for sure, I really hope that you have good news tomorrow. Take care.

Hi Lisa!

Glad the ct wasn’t too traumatic - good job you did’t know about the injection before hand!!
How do they check lung lesions - you can’t biopsy a lung can you?

My aunt had pagets 30 years ago… not blood relative so no ‘family’ history… she’s fine. Still jokes about her implant (yes, she had one even all those years ago!) - it goes solid in cold weather!
