Breast Cancer Care
Last May I had the triple test at my local hospital but although there was a suspicious area on the mammogram, they were unable to find anything “nasty”.
I had a repeat appointment this month and the area on the mammogram looked twice as big and scared the life out of me. It looked like a huge white blob. I have had intense pain in this area for almost a year (it’s just in my left armpit) but the radiographer couldn’t tell much from the scan so she said it’s probably just dense breast tissue.
Has anyone heard of this? I see the consultant next week and am not totally sure what to ask. The pain is worse and the are much larger - surely the two are connected in some way but I am being made to feel paranoid and stupid and am not sure what to do next.
Can anyone suggest anything at all.
Hi kgood
I’m sorry you’re having to go through this.
To be honest the only thing that really matters is whether you have breast cancer or not, and the only way to know that for sure is to do a biopsy.(That’s why I’m refraining from making any comments about your mammogram or radiographer’s comments.) So, really, there are no questions you need to prepare beforehand.
When you see you surgeon he will tell you what he thinks of your test results and will either want to do more tests if he’s concerned or, if he is unconcerned, will feel further tests are unnecessary. If you can’t live with that, tell him how worried you are and ask if you can have a biopsy just to put your mind at rest.
Your care at this point in time is all about getting the right diagnosis and moving on with your life whatever that may be.
If it is benign I feel you have a right to know exactly what it is so you can do some research on whatever it is that is causing the pain and discomfort and be reassured that it is not going to cause you any harm.
If it turns out to be malignant, god forbid, then you won’t have to do another thing because one thing I will say is that the NHS really comes into its own with serious health conditions.
Hopefully it is nothing (90% of the time it isn’t) and all will be fine. Don’t stress too much. Your surgeon has been in this situation so many times before. Let him guide you.
Good luck and let us know how things go.

Hi there
Had my visit - at first the consultant was rude and kept asking me why was I there and why had they done a repeat mammogram and ultrasound etc - I felt really silly as I couldn’t even answer all his questions. Finally he said that he would do an examination and then if he could feel nothing would discharge me that day.
He examined me then said he wanted to do an FNA and would see me again the following Thursday (31/5), I asked if he too could feel a lump and he said yes there was something there. I felt so relieved that at last someone was taking it seriously and no matter what the outcome I am not being silly or paranoid. He even apologised to me before I went and said that at this stage he wasn;t unduly worried which also put me at ease.
Just three more days to go…
Thanks for your posting.
