After shopping around I just decided to exclude bc from the insurance. I came to the conclusion that I’m unlikely to die while on holiday from bc, and am prepared to take the risk of cancellation if any bc problems occur in the next year. The premiums to include bc were just ridiculously expensive as I am only one year post diagnosis, and I don’t expect them to come down until two years post at least. I was very disappointed that many of the so-called specialist insurers, including insurepink either refused to cover me or were very expensive. I just went with an ordinary online year policy, declared my bc and had it excluded.
I have just been insured with Mia online, I heard about them thru this site. I was charged 98.00 cover for 2 weeks for Turkey.
I have finished my herceptin but I also have a condition with my blood prone to clotting so you may get a lot cheaper for Tenerife.
I also asked for a quote for New York at new year and they said approx 108.00 pounds, i was quoted £700 for same trip from other insurer.
Hi,
This whole issue is certainly a minefield isn’t it?!
As well as breast cancer, I have hypertension (high blood pressure.)
I take Tamoxifen and 2 medications for the hypertension.
I have had good deals from Mia online, fully covering both conditions in the past but when I wanted to renew my policy last month, they declined to insure me as I was only 6 weeks post op from having nipple reconstruction, at the time of my travelling to the Canary Islands.
After many searches and telephone medical screenings, I got an annual European (including Egypt and Turkey)policy, fully covering both breast cancer and hypertension, for £105 - fantastic - after either being declined or being quoted several hundreds of pounds.
Hi,
last year insurance was such a pain that I stayed in Europe and was covered free under my bank account with nat west for anything except bc. Just decided that I would really just wait till I came back if a problem, after all only 14 days. This year I am going to NY and because I was able to say I had not had an op in the last 12 months, I am fully covered for the whole year for anything, including BC related for a £60 extra payment (free for all the rest of the family).I was wondering about having lipofil earlier this year and wonder whether that would have been a problem. They have specific questions about what you have had done in the last year.
I would always go without BC cover myself for my particular dx if too expensive but it is a personal decision. My Dad sadly died in Spain while on holiday and the insurance company got a £25,000 bill to fly his body home after he died in a hospital there as they have to be embalmed and travel in a zinc lined coffin. It was a nightmare situation but getting that to pay would have been so tough.
Good luck and have a fab holiday
Lily
I was advised by my chemo nurse not to exclude bc when getting travel insurance if you become ill or have an accident on holiday whe insurance companies will try to atribute everything to your treatment/medication. There was a lady that she was treating the sliped and broke her leg on holiday and she was having a right going on trying to sort out the insurance. Don’t know if she finally sorted it out but I wouldn’t risk it. The cheapest quotes that I got were from Saga but they wouldn’t cover me when I went to Cuba. I’ve found the “specialist” companies far more expensive.
Just to say that I have used insurepink for the last 4 years(diagnosed in 2003). They charge me about £20 for a week. My husband uses them, he has heart disease, and they charge him about £30 for a week. This is holidays in Europe. This includes both our existing conditions.
I have used columbusdirect for my 3 week holiday in Lanzarote in Feb. It is more expensive for me as I am over 70 and also have asthma. It cost just over £100 for me and my over 70 friend. Google columbusdirect and you might be lucky with a 10% on line reduction. Also try insurethis.
It is better to be fully covered as insurance companies are there to make a profit and will be fully aware that many problems, for instance lymphoedema, broken bones, cellulitis and low white cell count to name a few are related to breast cancer.
I have started using insurancewith.com they are really reasonable. I used to use Insurepink, but found Insurancewith slightly cheaper, and every penny counts!
Good luck and happy hols.
Need to spend a few hours on the phone. You’ll get some complete knock backs, some hilarious prices and one or two which are worth pursuing. For my condition (dx Mar 09, surgery, chemo, rads now on Arimidex) but also a few other thngs like diabetes depression and high blood pressure) I found Miaonline and Freedom of Cambridge have come out best on European and non European trips - but still each trip is costing me more than my old annual policy did before my cancer.
Ladies who have posted already, do any of you have secondaries?
I have travelled quite a bit under my existing policy in which I was exempt from anything to do with breast cancer, but didn’t pay anything extra. At the time I thought that this was OK, as I perceived that the only likely problem could be a new lump, in which case I could phone the BC nurse and make an appointment for my return. However I now realise that this was short-sighted as I could have had had un-diagnosed bone secondaries and broken a bone!
I now find myself in the unfortunate position of having bone mets and a hip that is likely to fracture at any moment. I want a holiday before the surgery, however I know that I must have insurance now, as a fracture is highly possibly! Has anyone else travelled or had an insurance quote for secondaries?
I really need this holiday and we are very short of money due to my going part time very shortly, so I will really resent paying more!
Hi Nicola,
I have secondaries in my spine as well as Osteoporosis. I am going to the States on Thursday and Insurancewith.com have covered me for an extra premium of £192. So I am fully covered for my secondary breast cancer. Strangely enough, they declined to cover my Osteoporosis!
