holiday worries

Hi everyone

I finished FEC-T & 15 rads on 23rd December, for Triple Negative Invasive Ductal Carcinoma.  I had a mastectomy without reconstruction.:smileyvery-happy:

As a treat after all my treatment, my partner Ian and I are going to the Domincan Republic with friends in June. Due to having a mastectomy, I have had to buy holiday clothes with a higher neckline just incase anything is on show if you catch my drift! :smileysurprised:

The prosthesis doesnt usually bother me day to day, but then we are only coming into Springtime, and I usually wear a casual dress or tops to work with trousers.  :smileyhappy:

The nearer our holiday is getting, the more I wish I had gotten a reconstruction.  :smileyfrustrated:

I am worred that it is really obvious after swimming or taking a wee plunge in the pool.  I am or was should I say, pretty well endowed (44D) - so my fear is if it weighs down in my costume or something.   :smileyembarrassed:

I keep telling myself to stop being silly, but then that fear just creeps back to the forefront.    My other half  always tries to make a joke of things and suggested I get a tattoo where my breast used to be and go topless! lol  I dont think at the age of 54 I am going to start topless sunbathing or a tattoo for that matter lol:smileyvery-happy:

Has anyone swam with a mastectomy swimming costume? Does the prosthesis stay put? Is it still level with your ‘good breast’?  :smileyfrustrated:

I just want to be mentally prepared for any eventuallity. :smileywink:

thanks in advance

Hi

I have used the amoena  swim prothesis and found it stayed in place but I am only a 36b, I had a made measure swimsuit from woman-zone and it has pockets that hold the prothesis in place.

Hope you enjoy your holiday.

Hi

There is another thread discussing swim prostheses (in the Living with Breast Cancer section) which you might want to look at. I just posted something about Nicola Jane lightweight foam swimming prostheses. I find these are great for exercise. I also find that in summer I tend to wear them all the time as much more comfortable than the silicone ones when it is hot. I am smaller - somebody at Nicola Jane did say that sometimes for larger sizes people prefer their weighted foam ones. Nicola Jane are very helpful so might be worth a call or if you can get to one of their shops I found it really useful to try on different things. I was thinking about taking up swimming so I did try on a mastectomy swimsuit: seemed cleverly designed so I would guess that with a swimming prosthesis it ought to be fine. Have a great holiday!

Hi Christina

I am 53 had mx in July last year, chemo then rads which finished late January.  As a treat before returning to work this week went to Gran Canaria in February.  I bought a swim prosthesis from amoena in the sale (£45) and a mastectomy One piece costume, also in the sale, I am a 40/42 a/b.  I successfully went in the pool whilst away and felt quite confident that I looked fine, no drooping etc.

Some swimwear is as dear as the mastectomy ones and you don’t pay VAT so try amoena. I also got a halter neck bandeau one on eBay for £19.99, it was a Nicola Jane one and looks great on and is not too low to show anything.

Hope this helps.

Hi Christina,
Hope you have an amazing holiday. Have you looked at getting travel advice and vaccinations too ? If you put fitfortravel into google it throws up a well managed site, then you just need to select your destination.
Enjoy it all.
