It sounds slightly crazy but I am due to start rads after wle. I am due to go on holiday to Lanzarote end of March and all along they have said don’t cancel we will make a note of it in your records. I had a call yesterday with my dates but will have only finished rads by two days before I go. Oncology say they have taken my holiday into account and I will be fine, just cover up etc. From what I have read it seems to me that there is no guarantee that my skin will be in any condition to go away. How realistic is it to go? Would it be safe to delay rads? We are only going for a week but the whole family is booked to go. Booked long before this all hit me. May be I am in denial that I have got cancer!
Hi - I went on holiday about a week after I finished rads (to Australia). By the end of my 6 weeks my skin was very red and tender but not so sore that it stops you from doing anything. But you will need to cover up and buy a big tub of Aqueous cream! That was the only side effect I had - I didn’t get tired or anything so over to you - can you go for your week and just chill?
Good luck!

I have been wondering about this.
i have been thinking about the insurance cover aspect though. as some companies seem to say they will only cover after so many weeks of treatment finishing or having op. its seems to be about 4 weeks.
is this correct anybody got experience. i dont think i dare go without proper insurance.
as far as sun is concerned with rads, i was going to buy a couple of those rash vests. they are what surfer dudes wear to protect them from sun and sometimes you see kiddies wearing them on beach. short sleeve or long sleeve top which is special material UV protection 50+. probably high factor cream will be fine but if you are worrying.

If I were you I would delay rads. This is what I did in 2008, I was due to start rads straight after chemo. I told them I needed a holiday. They told me to go and rest. I was away for a whole month and started rads then.
My skin did not suffer too much from 25 rads but heat of the sun even on top of a t-shirt was uncomfortable.
This time around, we discussed holidays again. I chose to have my rads just before because it was only five rads, and I am going skiing, it is not like my skin will be exposed to the sun.
Enjoy Lanzarote!
Insurance might be another matter, but if you took insurance prior to diagnosis, you should be fine, but you MUST inform them.
I went on holiday two days after rads finished. I took all my dressings with me, but I was in this country
I was lucky, my skin didn’t really suffer much. By the end it wasn’t really red unless I got warm and then it went slightly pink, my nipple was quite sore but this is where I had the last few concentrated doses as my lamp was right behind, but I was really religious with the acqueous cream, so I don’t know if that made a difference. I didn’t go on hols during my treatment but it was last spring when it was really warm here in London, and I spent most of the time in between apps sunbathing in the garden (I know I shouldn’t but I love the sun) and had no ill effect.
Thank you for your advice. Feeling a little bit more confident about going now. Have to sort out travel ins. as runs out on 23rd March. Next job.
