how does one get genetic testing for BC

When I went to a breast care clinic 4 years ago I was told that I have quite a high risk of getting breast cancer as it runs in my family. How do I go about getting genetic testing to see if I have the ‘gene’?

Hi,

Iwas diagnosed last year. My mother died from ovarian cancer some years ago. I mentioned my fears for my family to my oncologist. She referred me to the genetic counselling department. I then had quite a lengthy form to fill in regarding the history of cancer in my family. I have heard from them recommending counselling.

I think your first port of call is your onc. I wish you well.

You may fine it useful to have a look at the BCC booklet ‘breastcancer in families’. It explains what is meant by a significant family history of breast cancer and what to do if you think this may apply to you or to members of your family.
