How long before I lose my hair

Hi Had my first chemo last wed FEC, not sure when to expect my hair to fall out as it seems to have got thicker since I had it cut short last wed, is this normal?

Hiya, well done on getting over the first hurdle!

Hate to burst your bubble, but it’s usual to notice the first hair loss around 2 weeks after your first chemo., (sorry). So I’m sad to say that you’ve only got about another week’s grace.

Not all bad though, I love my wig and everybody says how much they like my new hairdo. (I swear, you can’t tell it’s fake!) If you like, pm me, and I’ll tell you where I got it.

Good luck, xxJacqxx.

Hi C Me,

first of all, congrats on getting the first one out the way, only a few more to go!

I had six doses of chemo, including 3 of FEC and all my hair didnt fall out. I had really long dark hair, which i got cut short to fit into the cold cap. I did notice loss from the crown and top of my head and the front of my hairline but i was lucky that it all didnt go. You might be the same if your using the cold cap?
I also had a gorgeous long brown wig which i wore too when i wasnt wearing my think hairband to cover my baldy patch.

Ive been done for three months now and hairs came right back in so its not long to wait! keep your chin up, i know its hard but you will get through this, feel free to pm if you’d like to chat

Yeah i have to agree my hair started to fall out about 2 weeks after my first FEC thats with using the cold cap too, i did not shave my hair tho, instead i wore a bandana over my head with hair down the sides as i could not bare shaving it until it had all practically fallen out. Now its starting to grow back (very dark and thick) and like others i also have a wig which no one can tell its fake but only really wear it if i go somewhere nice!!

Hi All
Thanks for your comments as I didn’t use the cold cap guess I have about a week left then, I have organised a wig through the hospital it was a good quality wig but I had to wait for it to be ordered, hopefully before next week or looks like my OH cap will come in handy.

Hi Carole, just to add that personally i was getting upset, even nauseous when my hair was falling out and so shaved my head the day of my 2nd chemo, i found this very liberating and stopped me worrying every day about will i suddenly wake up with no hair. Once shaved, it was actually quite easy to get used too. Although i still cant wait to ditch the hats. I think the worse for me is losing the eye brows and lashes, still have a few but not many, but that has happened since the docetaxel.
I hope you find it isnt as bad as you expect
take care

Hi Carole,

I also chose to remove my own hair before I ever woke up with it lying on the pillow! It had started to come out and I agree with Anna that there is a feeling of control when you take the initiative. Goodness knows there’s not much that we can control at the moment!

Hope your wig arrives in time though I’m sure the cap will look really edgy!

I will be starting chemo shortly so glad I saw this thread. Forewarned is forearmed so to speak. My neighbour got her wig through the NHS at the hospital. It’s beautiful and I’ve told her I will be stealing it soon!

U lovely ladies are so brave! - I am due to start chemo this Fri & am so worried about my hair! - I did have shoulder length hair, have today had it cut to a very short bob just beneath my ears, so luv it! & want to try n keep it, does the cold cap work? Luv Em (TomnLorasmum) xx

Hi, i wasnt offered the cold cap, i dont think my hospital does it. I have heard good and bad stories about it. Good luck with chemo, i hope it goes well for you. What chemo are you having?

Hi Em

I had the cold cap for my first 3 chemo sessions (FEC). my hair still went very fine as it was so thick before. but by the end of my 3rd session it was so unbearable to wear that i ditched it. In the end it all fell out, i would suggest that if its offered give it a go!!

Hey Em,

i used cold cap for every session of my chemo and it did work. I had a lot of hair before and it did go very fine, what with me being dark it was quite noticable. but i wore thick hairbands and little berets to cover my crown and the top of my head.
If you can persevere you should. Good luck with your treatment xxx

Hi All
I find that I have to leave from coming on this site periodically as I get very anxious about things after reading some of the threads, but this one has left me quite up beat as the positive attitude has certainly shone through, I am no longer fretting as I was and checking the mirror every time I go to the bathroom, what will be will be and as you’ve stated it will grow back, my eyebrows are very thin any way and I am used to pencilling them in (haven’t grown much since I plucked them thin in the 70’s) eyelashes coming out obviously hamper your eyes dust etc. but so I gather a little eye-liner gives the impression of lashes also has any one tried false ones I haven’t but there’s always a first time for everything.
thank you all take care Carole xx

Hi Everyone,

Isnt it funny what can make your heart leap, I am part way through chemo, lost all the lady hair n , stuff, not to worried, but just has a long soak in the bath, and decided to put me glasses on, blind as bat without,.and you should have seen the lenth of the hairs on my legs, well just had to be a lady and shave the legs. Boy did that feel good, head still looks like convit 99 but spring is sprouting.

love to all xxx
