How long do chemo effects last after the last one ?

Maybe a stupid question but i finished chemo 7 weeks ago and i still have that awful yucky taste in my mouth, sometimes i still think i can taste the chemicals , i really thought this would have gone by now - anyone else with this ?
I also feel like i have loads of mucous in my throat and i am forever trying to clear my throat. Seen gp who said it was due to acid reflux. Has anyone else suffered or suffering with anything similar ?

Still got thrush, just got rid of heartburn I think, and I’m ten weeks post chemo. Hair only just starting and my nails are a mess. Bet that cheered you up! Inc said 4-6 weeks… I wish! Nails, he said a year. I think the poison takes months to clear from the system but others may be along who know differently… Grim at times, isn’t it? Jane

Sorry beardie … I’m five weeks post chemo … was doing fantastically and recovering from chemo well … until last week I got Shingles. The Chemo nurses tell me this is because my immune system is so low from chemo and I will be more prone to illness for the next 12 months or so! Deep joy!!!

Thanks ladies guess i was expecting to much too soon x

It takes quite a while for your immune system to fully recover from all the poisons. Like Angie I was advised that I’d be more vulnerable to things for around 12 months and just to prove the point like Angie I am now experiencing the joys of shingles and I finished chemo at the end of April.

Just take it easy and remember that it does get easier the further away you get from your last treatment. I noticed that my taste buds were the longest thing to recover and they still aren’t completely back to normal. Plus the mouth ulcers took a couple of months to disappear completely. My hair was a bit slower on the uptake but it’s not doing too badly now.

Remember, also, Nymeria, that Shingles can be brought on by stress, too. And if anyone has suffered from stress, it’s us lot! I’m surprised that more of us don’t get it. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, though, having had it in my right eye in March 2008 (solely due to stress). It took me months to get over it properly.

I’m now 3 and a half years post DX and 3 years since finishing chemo. It took a long time before I could say I was over the effects - probably 12 months. It’s a gradual thing and you do feel progressively better.

I’m now 3 years past chemo and am feeling great. My outlook on life has changed and I enjoy life more than pre-BC. It still hangs over me, but is at the back of my mind, and I appreciate the small things more.

Once you’re feeling physically better (which can take a few months), put it where it belongs, at the back of your mind, and get on with your life,
