How long is your hair?

Finished chemo mid December & have been wigless since mid April. My hair came back grey, which I wouldn’t have minded if it was a uniform colour but it was very patchy so has been tinted twice. It was dead straight to start with but is quite curly now, about 2’’ long at a guess, too short to do anything with it, it just does what it likes & I hate it, it looks like a sheep’s fleece. Got in touch with my hairdresser to book an appt to see if she can do anything with it, but she’s on hols, & can’t fit me in till 28th Aug. That’s OK I guess as it may be a bit longer by then. I know I shouldn’t moan, having spent so much time with none & I like the freedom of no wig, but can’t help not liking the hair. Eyelashes came back quite quickly so I can use mascara easily, & that made a huge difference. Brows are still quite sparse which I don’t mind as I had been struggling for some time to see well enough to pluck them. Lady bits are covered again, have only had to shave legs & unaffected armpit once, no hair where nodes were removed, I guess that may be permanent. My dx was 9th July 2009, & surgery was 30th, so it was my ‘birthday’ yesterday. Don’t have an appt yet for 1st year mammograms, which I am dreading. Onc says if it gets to Aug without me getting appt I am to phone about it - fat chance !

Hi Divvy
Happy birthday for yesteday! Hope you had a good day?

I know how you feel about the hair, although i am getting used to it, i do not like it and there is no way on this earth that i would have chosen to have it like this.
I still struggle to look at it in the mirror, which is silly i know.
Everyone says ‘hold your head up high, as the new hair is a sign that you have gone through the mill and come out the other end’! Mmmm…not sure how to take that really, as it does not stop me disliking my new hair with a passion!

I also have very little hair where the nodes were removed, but lady bits have grown back, and leg hair too.
Lashes are there, so mascara goes on, and brows are not too bad, don’t need the brow make up any longer at least.

My diagnosis was September last year, so is a mammogram due?

Anyway, hope your hair gets a move on, it is so frustrating i know…

Hi Naz
Have you done the school run without covering now? Or did you keep covered until the end of term?

Glad to hear it is now coming back, but yes, impatient that there isn’t more yet!

I have a cut booked for next week - it needed doing a couple of weeks ago as the back of the neck and around my ears is very scruffy, but my hairdresser was booked up. I’ll be glad to get back into my ‘cut every 5 weeks’ routine.

Mine has kinks in places were there didn’t used to be kinks, so I suspect curls are on their way. Still a bit too short to really show, and very grey at the sides and dark on top.

Hey Mammie, how are you doing? Looking great in your photo.

Julia - I am having envy of your two inches and daring to bleach! Blimey! Photos please!!!

Hi Flora
No, i bared all during the last week of term, and i am glad it did.
On the last day, i walked into an assembly hall full of parents for the Headteachers leaving speech, i felt so brave (not sure why!).
Anyway, only one parent gave me a long stare, and she knew from the beginning, so not sure what that was about.

Mine is also starting to kink and stick out, i bought some serum to try and flaten it, but as i had naturally curly hair previously, i won’t be surprised if i end up looking very curly on top soon!

Julia, be careful with that bleach me thinks…xxx

Happy hair growing all.

Nearly four weeks since last tax, no signs of lashes or brows yet. Hope to have enough hair by the time school goes back to go without anything, braving out the stares! Which brand of organic hair colour is good to cover the grey bits? How long should I wait to colour? Hope the tamoxifen will not thin the hair again! X Tina

Hi Tina
The hair dye that seems to be recommended on here in particular, is Naturtint. You can buy it online or in Holland and Barratt. It is kind and gentle on the hair apparently, as it contains no nasty chemicals.
The other dye is found out about, is one ny Daniel Field…he also does organic dye and you can check out the website for the different colours and the guy on the other end of the phone is most helpful!

The recommended time to wait is six months, but some people have waited less time and been okay with it, so i guess it is up to you hwo soon you want to dye really.

Hope you have enough hair for Sept. and no-one stares, if so they are very rude!

Happy hair growing!

xx

I used Naturtint much earlier, about 3 months after chemo. My hairdresser did it for me the first time. I thought it was quite expensive for my tiny amount of hair, but she mixed half of each bottle in a plastic dish, so that I got two applications from the one pack.
Maybe some enterprising manufacturer could make ‘mini’ applications for ladies in our situation.
Because we’re worth it !

Had last chemo 31st March and hair is about 3cm long and has got very thick. Its come back totally grey, which I am having coloured at end of August, my hairdresser is getting in a Naturtint one for me.
I never thought I’d ever say this, but I actually love my hair this short and have had so many compliments about how it suits me. It helps with the hot flushes too having short hair.
I didnt know about the Daniel Field organic dye’s, so will have to have a look. Once my hairdressers done it the first time I think I will do it myself afterwards as I just know I’m going to get charged the full wack, even thought I’ve hardly any hair.
Happy hair day
Jane

Hi everyone

Haven’t been on much lately as been busy working.

My hair growing well, average length 2cm, and a bit wavy. I like my hair this short, but tend to forget how short it is.

I still wear the wig when I go in to see my Mum, (long story - she has dementia and doesn’t know about my treatment), so I am looking forward to when I can ditch the wig and tell her I have had a ‘haircut’!

I am finding it hard at times to settle back into life again, - I hate it when people expect me to be ‘back to normal’ - so much seems to have changed and am finding it much more difficult to concentrate.

Anyway, hope you like my new photo - baby Acacia is gorgeous and I am making the most of being a new granny!

All the best
Chris

Hi all, hair seems to grow at very different paces. Mine seems to have got ‘stuck’ at this length.
Hi Flora - lucky you having to have hair cut! My daughter did a quick trim of the wispy long bits. No real sign of curl yet though. But it does seem to want to go forwards.

Love all and keep on growing xxxxx
