Hi everyone, i really need advice. irecently has ovaries out(4 weeks ago) i was adv by surgeon hrt would not be an option. i dont have cancerbut brca2 gene. i totally played down the prospect of the menopause and it has hit me big time. genetics are saying hrt may be ok but im having mastectomy in a few months and was told not to be taking hrt prior to op. i am 30yrs old and totally confused and struggling with menopause. has anyone else been told conflicting advice about hrt? please help x
Hi Anon1, I had my ovaries out in Jan 07, and really found the sudden onset of the menopause a nightmare, hot flushes and insomnia particularly. I was referred, by the surgeon,to a gynae with a particular interest in hrt/breast cancer, and have been taking hrt since. I went in for bilateral mastectomies last November and mentioned the hrt (as I had been told I may have to stop taking it), but was told it was ok by the plastic surgeon. I guess everyone’s situation is different, I was 47 then, don’t know if age plays a factor. Best wishes,
im brac1 carrier and having oopherectomy…and mastectomies as a preventative measure and ive been told i can have hrt…is it safe???
hi katybella, i have since found out as oopherectomy reduces risk so much both to breast cancer as well as ovaian it would be safe in small doses to the age of 50 which would mean as im 32 i could have it for 18years. but when breasts are off they can increase dose if needed. so u should be fine i hope this helps. trust me i think u will need something i thought i would be ok if no hrt was possible but i was wrong… good luck xx
Hi,I have since had my ovaries removed, and i have been told i can have hrt,i am now waiting for preventative breast surgery, the menapausel symptoms werent as bad as i expected although the night sweats were some gettin use to,but since ive been on low dose hrt there not as bad!!!
katybella, that’s amazing you are doing well, im still not on hrt they are sending me to a specialist who deals with hereditary bc and hrt. but to be honest im coping so much better with symptoms. x
