I THINK I NEED TO SCREAM BUT NOT SURE!

Hi all

First the good news … had the results of my first checkup today and I´m delighted to say I am currently cancer-free … based on liver, mets and blood …

BUT

at the risk of boring anyone here who is already aware of the nightmare I had with my neutrofils during chemo … it appears as though nearly 6 months after last chemo my neuts are still pants and I may have an underlying problem with my blood …

although I did kick the flu on my own recently (quite glad I had it now)

AAAAGGGGHHHHHHH

Appointment with the haemotologist on 15th Jan - no wonder I needed all those neupogen injections and had at least one delay on nearly every chemo… thank goodness they check the blood before they give it to you …I´d be dead by now!

so … instead of having my first carefree new years eve in 3 years we have a bit of a blot on the landscape

I know I should be grateful … and I am … but I am also a bit worried and feel so sorry for OH - who is terribly disappointed

In the back of my mind I am wondering if I am just “low” like being a bit “short” etc

If the haematologist is going to suggest anything that invloves weight gain or hairloss then he´s going to need a juicy steak for his eye!

oh well

rant over

lots of love

You never know - it might just be a blip - but somehow i don´t think so

thanks for listening - sorry about the drama - buy the way - the onc said something hilarious which I am going to put in the waiting for test results section …

on account of language issues he actually said “your neutrofil levels are too low but don´t worry too much they are currently above the level of spontaneous infection” … lucky I just didn´t explode on the chair!

big kiss love FB xx

Hey FizzBix - you rant and stamp as much as you need. This is one of the great things about this site - you can- people understand. I really don’t blame you, it must seem never ending.

I really hope you do manage to have some fun at Christmas, you take care

Hi Fizbix

I had the same problem as you and still do to a certain extent. My herceptin was delayed as they though it may be to do with that. I did have quite a few spells in hospital with various infections on intravenous antibiotics. My neutrophils at their lowest were 0.2 and this was some 6 months after chemotherapy had finished. They very slowly have crept up and I think really it takes around 6 months to a year for your body to sort itself out. I had a bone marrow biopsy to rule out anything sinister so don’t be surprised if they suggest this to you and if they do - ask them to sedate you - I insisted upon it and remember nothing about it. I’m also under a haematologist as well as oncologist and they are keeping an eye on me. I was very nervous about all of this so I really understand where you are coming from. Hoping things are ok for you.
Best wishes
Ruby xx

hi Ruby and Jacqui - thanks for that - I just wrote you both a long reply and lost the lot - will write again soon

FB,
that is sooooooo pants my friend!!!
Hoping it is not another nasty thing to put up with. You did more than your time already. Wish I could post you some of my neuts for Christmas. Hope you can put it out your mind for a bit so you can enjoy the festive season. Might be worth looking up how diet can help. If it has gone up when they check it, they may just monitor you
Good luck

Hi Fiz,
Just thought I’d chip in - I finished chemo this time last year (FEC and taxol) and had no end of trouble with my blood counts and treatment being postponed because of it. The other week I went for a check-up and they said my blood count was still really low! Over a year on! I think someone told me before that the neulasta can sometimes give you sluggish bone marrow in the longer term. They are happy to let me just keep going, expecting it to pick up naturally.
Good luck with your appointment, hope he’s reassuring

Hello FB, i am sorry to hear that your neuts are still low. I have been lucky on that front and mine never went below 1.1. I did have gcsf after 4 of my chemos so maybe it helped. I hope everything goes well for you on 15th January. Yes, i have the weight gain after chemo and it is so hard to shift. I do not help myself as constantly crave sweet and fatty foods and give in to it. Hope you have a happy and healthy 2009.

Rach

Hi again, FB,

Sorry to read about the low neuts. That must be worrying for you. let’s hope your body recovers naturally. The fact that you fought off the flu shows that they must have come up to a reasonable level then, doesn’t it?
Glad you didn’t explode on the chair!! lol

I get the impression that not many of us escape without some side effect or other, from the treatments we endure.I suppose it is still the lesser of two evils, isn’t it, but just so worrying sometimes.

Hope you enjoyed Christmas, nevertheless. I’ve posted on the “losing weight” thread aswell.

Take care,
Ann XX

Thanks everyone - am hoping that a more healthy eating plana and a reduction on my massive tea consumption will help - with a bit more exercise.

Good luck for 2009 one and all
