I'm gonna get Goked!! Sort of...

I went to my local John Lewis so look for a scarf for my ever thinning hair… asked a lady for help who suggested some hats to me. She came to the changing rooms with me to explain why I neded to have a changing room to try a hat but there was a queue. Then another lady cae through and said does anyone want to use my room? The lady I was with said asked if I could use it as I needed some privacy, so off I went.
She went away and came back with another hat and a pashmena (for dual purpose - very clever) then we got talking, I told her about my mastectomy bla bla bla, and she suggested that I come back after my treament, she would go round the shop, pick out things to suit my new shape and advise me… Almost like being Goked but without getting naked… Thought I’d mention it in case you have a John Lewis near you, who may also have a similar service, it would be a nice thing to do when you are finised with treatments.
Best wishes

aww mandy that’s lovely, its great when people are that helpful

Thats lovely. A similar thing happened to me. I went to get all my hair cut off really short (was below my shoulders in length) before starting chemo. I had explained to my hairdresser why i was doing this and it was obvious that i was upset. At the end of the appointment she turned round and said ‘there will be no charge’'. I then went into my local Debenhams and the beautician there gave me a free makeover and filled my bag full of cosmetics. She just went round every counter telling them about me and came back with a pile of stuff -bath bags, creams, perfume, even some aftershave for hubby. All that kindness meant so much on what was a really crappy day.

When I was christmas shopping, I went to the jewellers, H Samuels for a jewellry box. Got talking to a young girl working in there as she was aware I had had chemo and asked about it whilst serving us. She was so moved by my story that she cried and hugged me and gave me a 30% discount, and said that if i went back she would give this each time. I have seen her again since and we now chat on facebook!!! Its so lovely that someone so young can be inspired in this way, and not shrug off cancer as being ‘someone elses problem’.

What lovely stories! Kindness from strangers is a beautiful thing, and often seems to come when you are having a lousy day, doesn’t it? They are blessings from heaven to me. I hope to be like that for others, now I’m getting back on my feet.

I remember how the kindness I was shown when I went for a bra fitting after my mastectomy, in M&S. It was the most kindness and consideration I had been shown through the whole ordeal, and I was close to tears just thinking about it when I went to pay for my bra!

It’s a rough old roller coaster of a ride, and it’s really heart warming when someone recognises that we need a bit of sympathy and kindness.

Any more lovely stories to add, anyone?

Love, A. x

I have another nice story… when I got diagnosed it was 9 days before I was due to fly out to Oz for a holiday of a lifetime for my 30th birthday… which we had to cancel. Although I have worked at my place for 4 years, I recently got promoted and work for the “Managers”. I have ony been working with them for 5 months and for my birthday, and bearing in mind what was happening they had a whip round and got be £60 worth of spa vouchers beacuase they thought I would need it after it was all over, plus my old department also had a whip round, managed to find my Amazon wish list and bought me loads of wii games, ds games, cds and a foot spa for those long days I will be stuck at home… its amazing how thoughtful people really are without you realising. I think sometimes we really under estimate people generally, and sadly its at times like these when we have to be proven wrong. I for one feel very lucky to have such great friends and work colleagues.
The girls at work have also taken it upon themselves to particiate in this years race for life, myself included just becuase of what happened to me, we are doing a joint sponsorship, gonna have a bit in the works newsletter. They may have my name on their T Shirts, I will have everyone I have met in hospital and all the lovely people on the Breast Cancer Care forums.
God theres a lot of love in the air tonight. I think I better go now LOL
