I am due to have a mastectomy and reconstruction next week. Feeling anxious, anybody in the same position at the moment or know that they will be having surgery in the near future?
Hi Quadsie and welcome to the BCC forums
Along with the valuable support and shared experiences you will receive here from your fellow users, I have posted a couple of links to some of our publications which you may find useful to read, the first is called ‘Your operation and recovery’ and the second is about breast reconstruction:
Here’s a link to the BCC resource pack which has been designed for anyone newly diagnosed:
Please also feel free to call our helpline for further support and information on 0808 800 6000 which is open weekdays 9-5 and Sat 9-2.
Take care
Lucy
Hi Quadsie,
Would you mind if I asked what type of reconstruction you are having and at which hospital. There are many of us who have had mastectomy and recon but our experiences will be different for each type of op. For example, mine was an immediated DIEP and I am more than happy to let you know what my recovery was like if this or the Tram free flap is what you are about to have, as they are similar in terms of recovery. Each surgeon also have their preferences in terms of instructions as well.
There are also many women on here that have had LD flap with or without implants that will be able to help if that is your op. Which ever op it is, I wish you well and try not to worry too much (easier said than done)as the thought of the surgery is often worse than the actual deed.
Regards,
Marjay xx

Thanks to all for your replies. I have only just joined the forums, seems a good place to be in touch with people who have or have gone through similar circumstances. I’m having LD flap surgery. I may require a small implant. I’m having this done at the RAH in Paisley. I too have had chemo first. My last session was on 10 and 11 August. The cancer I have is not “normal” breast cancer, it is small cell cancer which is normally found in the lung but mine appeared in my right breast. My surgeon was quite happy to schedule the surgery for around 4-5 weeks after my last chemo.
