Incidental discovery and fear of mammo guided core biopsy

Hey all :pink_heart: hope everyone is doing ok. I’m on the wrong side of ok today for sure with my results being discussed at tomorrow’s MDT meeting. Just wanted to say hello to the only place where people really understand what this results anxiety feels like

Hi everyone, hope everyone is doing ok, I’m not really although I’m supposed to be. I’d really value some advice/opinion. I had the results of my ultrasound guided vacuum biopsy. I was told that it was “good news” and just “benign changes” (sclerosing adenosis) and that because this was the second benign result they would “accept the benign result this time” . But I don’t feel reassured. That wording first of all didn’t make me feel that secure. The core biopsy was discordant, really not enough for a 3cm area, the mammogram guided biopsy failed (and from what I read this is the “gold standard” for detection) and so they are relying on samples from the targeted ultrasound guided vacuum biopsy. But the target is the clip, and the clip just leads to the area where they found SA when they did the core. I know they honed in on a bright calcification they could see on the ultrasound, but calcifications are tricky, and just because they sampled some SA doesn’t mean there isn’t DCIS living alongside it in calcifications they can’t see on the ultrasound which is also not great for picking up microcalcifications (especially given they informed me my breast are not just dense but very dense), they told me this at my first appointment. It’s more than possible I know that. With calcifications a sample is still only a sample, and even though vacuum takes bigger samples, 3cm is a fairly large area. I feel like an excision biopsy should be considered. I’m supposed to feel better that multiple radiologists reviewed it but that just makes me think, well it couldn’t be cut and dry or one radiologist would have been able to just make a conclusion? My consultant also said they had now downgraded it, if they are talking about the mammogram image you can’t do that based on the biopsy result, even if you trust that result, the mammogram result is still the mammogram result. A friend of mine, different scenario, but her BC was only discovered because she pushed for an MRI. And like she said, you need to advocate for yourself because nobody else is going to. I trust you all, and you can tell me if I’m being paranoid and mad, I know 3 months of limbo has messed with my brain, but I’m in the process of writing down every question and concern I have to ask at a face to face with my consultant on Monday, which I got because I was overwhelmed over the phone. I’m not always that good at standing up for myself but I want to make sure I do and don’t leave there feeling I didn’t use my voice. Sorry this post is so long! My brain is Morris dancing and doing the tango all at the same time :sob:

Hi. Your particular situation isn’t the same as mine but as part of my diagnosis I did have an MRI of both sides which was very reassuring as I’d convinced myself that I had cancer both sides despite the mammogram being clear.

As for the anxiety I just has to keep reminding myself to breathe and long walks helped clear my head and organise my thoughts.

Writing a list is really good plan. I hope you get the answers you need.

Hi thanks for your reply :pink_heart: I had a pretty long meeting with the consultant who did her best to reassure me and go through things. I try and tell myself before the internet we wouldn’t have all these rabbit holes to go down. I said how the sample is still just 10 - 20 per cent of the whole area due to size and she had to agree with that. The downgrade I’m still struggling with making peace with that move even though I would be going for surgery if they hadn’t. I also had to have the inversion re-ultrasound scanned because it had gotten worse but again decided duct ectasia. I’m very much questioning that too reading about how they can sometimes see a benign reason for something to happen so they stop looking further to consider it’s actually something more sinister causing it. I think my brain has just been on high alert for 3 months and from 2 concerns to go to high probability of ok but not definitive just hasn’t been enough to bring me down when I’m reading all about masking effects, and ultrasound missing things and the trouble with very dense breast tissue hiding things. Yesterday I was firmly convinced that there is DCIS somewhere in that 80 - 90 per cent unsampled calcification area AND under the nipple hiding from the ultrasound. I keep jumping from which area I feel more paranoid about on a loop.

Then I’d suggest asking if an MRI would give a more definitive answer. If so ask for one. They can only say no.

How are you now? I’ve been reading your posts and I’m heading in the same direction. I had a biopsy-painful, not enough lidocaine, am waiting for results. My calcification is 1.5cm. Indeterminate.
