Infrequency of check-ups

Have just completed 8 months of treatment, surgery, chemo, rads, now on arimadex. I will see my surgeon this August (13 months after surgery) and will see my oncolgist in August 2010. No scans etc just a mammogram in a year’s time. Is this time scale general for BC now - or just in Leicestershire?

I finished Herceptin in November 2008, after surgery, chemo, rads which ended at the end of 2007, now just on Arimidex. I see someone every 3 months ie oncologist evry 6 months and surgeon every 6 months.

I assume it’s pretty general Topsymo, I shall be finishing 2 years of treatment (apart from Arimidex) next month, as on top of chemo etc, I have been on a year of Herceptin.

I asked my oncologist last week what the follow-up plan was, and he told me I would see him every six months, and an annual mammogram.

Of course, if I am worried about anything in the meantime, I can contact the hospital.

Best wishes

I had a WLE for Intermediate stage DCIS followed by radiotherapy which finished three months ago. I will receive a mammogram after two years (not sure when two years is from). I was told by the Oncologist that the norm would be to see them again in 12 months but they felt I wouldn’t be happy with that and they suggested I see them again after 3, 6 and then 12 months to ensure I didn’t feel abandoned by the system. So, for anyone worrying about just being cast off to deal with things by yourselves, it is worth expressing your fears and reservations.

I had WLE and rads, finished in Nov 08, saw onc and surgeon in December, and have follow-ups with both in March, then yearly mamo’s in July. Will carry on seeing both every 3 months!

Hi ,I finished chemo and rads last June 08,I have already had a mamogram and bone density scan and I will be seen by Onc 6 mthly and Surgeon 6 mthly so I see someone every 3 months but not sure how long this will go on for,my mamograms will be done yearly.
I agree with Suzanne its worth expressing your fears and reservations with the clinics

Hi there,

I have just seen your comment on the Trisha thread about appointments,I was dx Dec 2007, WLE, rads zoladex(2 yrs, tamoxifen(5yrs). In my first year I had an appointment approx every 8/10 weeks, alternating between the surgeon and oncologist. I have just had my first year mammogram along with an appointment with the surgeon and as it came back ok I now have an appointment every 3 months i.e oncologist May, surgeon August etc.
Hope this helps, I am being treated at Stockport Stepping Hill hospital.

Hi everyone- you all seem to be having far more appointments than I have!
I’ve been treated in Leics and was assured by the oncologist, when I queried the long gaps (especially the gap of 8 months after active treatment is finished) that this regime was now the normal one in most hospitals .
Don’t want to appear cynical but do wonder if it’s all down to saving money in our area.
I think most people accept that any worrying symptoms are likely to be picked up by ourselves, rather than at hospital checks, and of course we can then get back into the system- but I do think, psychologically that it is not good practice to cast us back on our own resources for so many months after such an intensive period of treatment.
