Interview with herceptin's inventor on way forward in cancer research

It can be found by googling:

DENNIS SLAMON: FROM NEW CASTLE TO NEW SCIENCE

It looks like there is quite a big split among cancer research funders on the way forward in fighting all types of cancer. Slamon is extremely well regarded, so his views are always worth noting.

His tone was optimistic, but realistic. Big progress against cancer in general in the next five to 10 years, but no cure, even with the new initiative to adopt a more results-oriented approach. He explains in the article why the pace of progress is so slow.

He talks about the US situation, but in the UK there have been concerns that the way that government research is funded may also skew research towards certain types of research that are more removed from treatments (although CRUK at least has a good track record on the applied side).

Christine: Could you put the web link…BCC OK about this usually these days. When I googled I found other stuff about him but not this article.

Many thanks

Jane

Hi Jane,

In case Christine isn’t around at the moment reading this the link is su2c.standup2cancer.org/node/194?page=1 so probably was the first thing you found when you googled but there are several pages of it - scroll down to the bottom.

Dawn

Thanks Dawn…strangely it wasn’t the link that first came up for me…oh google.

Jane
