Is goat milk Dairy!!??

I know this looks a really stupid question, but I had assumed that any milk from an animal was a form of dairy, therefore high in oestrogen, therefore to be avoided. Then a lady I met who had had bc told me that she uses goat cheese, milk & yoghurt as it isnt dairy. This doesnt ring true to me, can anyone tell me if it is true or not?
Thanks all

Hi Amanda,
It is the lactose in cows milk that seems to be the issue I think.
Goats milk and its products are OK from what I’ve been told. You should also avoid soya as it is supposed to affect things too.
Rice milk is another alternative but I find it a bit sweet.
I have had goats milk in my tea and cereal and there isn’t much difference to cows milk. They also do it in semi-skimmed in supermarkets.
I asked my onc about the link between BC and dairy and he said there were no real facts behind it but each to their own.
I did try to stay off dairy but I love cheddar too much and goats milk products can be a bit more expensive.

Hope this helps

I may be speaking a load of tosh here (I usually do) but there is something in the back of my mind that tells me you can now buy lactose free cows milk … I’m sure I’ve seen it advertised on telly … will check next time I am in the supermarket.

Hi, i’ve heard that goats milk is better than cows milk; but i avoid all dairy just incase, and use soy milk or oat/rice milk (however i could be wrong). I have read that cottage cheese is supposed to be okay, but i’m not sure if that’s right.

Lactose is found in all mammal’s milk, so if you are trying to avoid lactose, then goat’s milk is no better than cow’ milk and all products from goats milk are also classed as dairy. Also, Lilac is right, you can get lactose free milk. But I may be totally wrong, but I thought the reason that dairy was supposed to be bad in cancer was that the fat stored toxins and hormones, nothing to do with lactose? My oncologist reassured me that there is no conclusive evidence to suggest a problem, but organic milk/cheese where the cows are not given hormone and antibiotic treatment is probably better if I was worried. I looked at the prices of organic stuff and continued with the normal rubbish!

I bought some Lactose free milk and it tasted the same as normal milk. I think i bought it from Tescos it was in the fridge with the other milk

I use rice or oat milk for cereal but don’t like them in tea so I use organic skimmed milk then. I can’t do without cheese entirely but have cut down. As there is no conclusive evidence, I don’t want to deprive myself entirely of things I like! I do like goat and sheep cheese but we don’t seem to have as much choice here as is available in other countries eg Spain.

I’ve been taking organic rice dream since giving up dairy. It is an organic non-dairy alternative made from rice. In other words, it’s never been near an animal so no worries about hormones, lactose etc.

Incidentally, on the subject of lactose, it is difficult to avoid this because it is often used as a coating in the pill process - including tamoxifen, nolvadex-D etc. I’ve just checked my nolvadex-D and sure enough, it’s there.

Wishing you all well.

Talking of Spain, Anne, I buy a spanish sheeps milk cheese called Manchego - it’s usually in the ‘taste the difference’ type of ranges. I can’t bear the twangy taste of ‘goat’ in most sheep and goat products, but this is a hard cheese and like a v tasty cheddar.
I agree about the organic stuff - I keep looking at the price then going back to the usual stuff. I’ve tried to cut down on dairy e.g. not having cereal every morning like I used to, but I can’t resist cheese and biscuits.

When I first got diagnosed I read the plant book and tried dairy free and hated it, then I read a juicing book that advised that if you were going to have dairy to go for goats because they only have 1 bladder not 4 like a cow and therefore th milk was more suitable to the human stomach. The juicing book had nothing to do with cancer.

Another one of those non-intresting facts I seem to store in my mind and I now have organic skimmed milk as its what I prefer.

Hi

My tumor was oestrogen & progesterone receptive & HER2 (growth hormone?) so I would like an alternative to ordinary cows milk (which is high in these).

I have heard that soya milk has the plant oestrogen which is not so bad or even better - anybody know?

Also is organic milk still high in oestrogen?

Thanks

I was ER+ and advised to avoid Soya products. with regards to the organic milk having estrogeon I would imagine it would have as much as the other stuff … just not the man made chemicals

This is interesting stuff! I had not thought about lactose, I was curious about cow v goat from an oestrogen point of view. Why might lactose be a problem for BC patients? ( sorry, all these questions!!!)
I think organic milk wolud have just as much oestrogen, Oat milk is good on cereal & almond milk is lovely, v sweet ( but expensive) I try to avaoid soys as ER pos.
Cheers for now
