I am having all my treatment privately thanks to my employment insurance package, although since being off sick I now face redundancy on return!!! I have found that I have needed to find a lot of things out for myself, and there is little support. I asked my onc nurse if anyone else she was treating was at a similar stage to me on my first treatment, a few days later she phoned and asked if I would mind if one of her patients contacted me. We have now become firm friends and counsel each other, meet up regularly, and are both waiting for chemo 5 out of 6. I recommend asking your nurse.
I have found that its harder to get info and support, but once you get there its fine. I do find it incredible that you are either one or the other when we have paid the national insurance too. I have had to pay for my own prosthesis as the insurance wouldnt cover it and a later recon. The breast care nurse did try to get it for me on the NHS but couldnt. I dont think its down to the BCNs as they have been wonderful on the occasions I have met them, I feel its the private hospitals that fail to provide the support for operations such as mastectomies and illnesses such as chemo. You end up asking the NHS staff who then help on top of their normal load.
