Hello everyone, I’m new to this site but have had some great info already, I thought I would share my story and fears.
I was diagnosed with BC in November 2010 (grade 3). I was then diagnosed with Kidney cancer in January 2011 (picked up in a routine scan) just before i was about to start my chemo. I had my kindey removed in March 2011 (grade 1 tumour) and started chemo in April. I had scans etc before and after chemo and radiotherapy. My bone scan showed a single hot spot on my ribs on the same side that I had BC.
The oncologist said it was so small that he would leave it for 5 months and then take another look.
I had my bone scan last week and the hot spot is still there and hasnt changed in any way - good or bad news? The oncologist was quite positive and has now asked for a CAT scan to check my main organs again - He isn’t convinced that the cancer has spread.
I forgot to mention that I was also diagnosed with parathyroid which has led to higher calcium levels in the blood - the Doctors have yet to decide what to do with that.
So to conclude I was just wondering if there is anyone out there with a similar situation to my “rib” experience as this is causing me some great worry at the minute.
Hi mary50
I’m sorry to read that you are having a pretty tough time at the moment. I’m sure the users of this site will be along to support you soon.
In the meantime please don’t hesitate to give the BCC helpline a call and talk to one of the trained members of staff, who are there to offer emotional support as well as practical information. The free phone number is 0808 800 600 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9.00 to 5.00 and Saturday 9.00 to 2.00.
Best wishes Sam, BCC Facilitator
Hi Mary,
You sound like you have had a rough time getting a dx of two different cancers in such a short space of time!
Hotspot can be caused by things other than breast cancer secondaries such as infections, a broken rib, etc. I think that the fact it has not changed at all in the the 5 mths suggests that it is not cancer (certainly not active) but I have no doubt they will be watching and scanning again at some time in the future just to make sure.
Have you finished all your treatments for the breast & kidney cancer, or do you have ongoing stuff? Hope you will find a lot of support and friendship here.
Dawn

thanks for the replies. I have finished the chemo and radiotherapy and feel really well, My hair has grown back and my energy is increasing. I am quite upset today as I really was hoping the “spot” would have gone! I am trying to be upbeat with the fact that there has been no change. In many ways Im lucky that the kidney cancer was found and is totally unrelated to the breast cancer.
I suppose i have to accept that hospitals are going to be a way of life!
