I am 43 and have not had children in the past two weeks I have experienced an itch on my right breast now this is followed by sharp pain (not the same as pain during period) it seems to be around the nipple area and can take my breath away its so sharp. I’m very very worried. Can anyone give me some advice. Thankyou.

Hi Sarahlouise

Ask your gp to refer you to the breast clinic. In most cases it is nothing to worry about but it is best for he specialists to see you and give advice as they know more than GP’s

Sarahlouise i think your doing the right thing seeing your GP… hopefully it turns out to be nothing serious.

You’ve done the right thing making an appointment - just insist on a referral. Many GPs seem to believe that pain means it’s not anything sinister, and whilst it has to be said that most problems are benign, pain does NOT rule anything out, so don’t be fobbed off. I had a very definite lump, but also had the odd sharp shooting pain in my left breast - I have no idea if they were related, but I also know other women on here had pain too.

On a much more positive note - a friend of mine has lots of tiny cysts in her breast, all completely benign and needing no special attention, and they also cause shooting pains - so there is every chance that you are absolutely fine. Push for the breast clinic for your own peace of mind, NOT because we’re suggesting there is anything major wrong.

Big hugs

Hi all and thankyou for all your kind comments. Just got back from the Doctors and yes I have a 5-7cm lump but the Doc thinks its a cyst got to go to the breast clinic next week really terrified and got to go through the whole weekend with this now on my mind. Trying not to think the worst and stay positive, ’
think cyst’ is what I’m gonna do all weekend. Anyway thank you again for all your comments and fingers crossed. Will keep you informed of the outcome.

I’ve had cysts, and the treatment for them is usually immediate and completely effective. Cysts are very common, but very worrying until you learn that’s what they are. There are other things than cysts that do need further testing that are also not cancerous, so even if you have to have a biopsy which you have to wait for results for, please don’t let it freak you out.

Take a read of the “Referred to breast clinic” leaflet in the publications section, or ask a bit more if you want us to share our experiences at the breast clinic. Good luck.

i had a lump in nov and it was a cyst which they drained… fingers crossed for you too xxx
