Itchy and prickly breast

Hi - I completed my radiotherapy 2 weeks ago with really no discomfort…until yesterday! My breast suddenly is really itchy and prickly. I have been moisturising like mad and taking paracetamol to help with the “stabby” pains. However, not sure what’s best to help with the itching. Also, any ideas how long this lasts…I was told the effects would peak around 10-14 days, but it seems to just be starting now!
Any suggestions welcome.
Many thanks :grinning: xx

Hello miribubbles

Thank you for posting.

Following radiotherapy, you can experience skin reactions including your skin feeling dry, itchy and sore and would normally be at its worse between 7 and 14 days but this can vary from person to person. Most people find that their skin has improved about 4 weeks after treatment, but others can take longer especially if the skin has blistered or broken.

The Society and College of Radiographers has information you may find useful on skin reactions and how to care for your skin. As you have been using moisturising cream, you should speak to your treatment team about any other recommended creams you could use, but no evidence is available to say one is better than another and this will vary from person to person.

You say that you breast has become suddenly very itchy and prickly and you also describe having stabby pains in the breast, which you are taking paracetamol to ease the pain. We would always suggest getting any new symptoms checked with your treatment team, as they will be able to let you know if it is normal healing or if you need to be assessed.
