January 2016 Chemo starters

Have just been reading these 2 blogs recommended by someone in the Dec chemo thread
alittleearthquake.wordpress.com/2015/01/31/keeping-my-hair-through-chemo/
hbocuninformed.blogspot.co.uk/2015/03/everything-ive-learned-about-chemo-and.html?m=1
Although I’ve decided not to cold cap it (I hate being cold at the best of times!) might be of help to any of you who fancy going for it! They tell it as it is - really interesting and contain advice on wigs too
Hope these links work - I just copied and pasted them so no guarantees!!
Good luck to everyone starting chemo this week, fingers crossed for you all!

Same here Claire, on my own, my daughter (24) went back to Bristol in Saturday, my son (21) to Cardiff today and my husband back at work. Had the worst nights sleep since it all started last night, but I’m up and have decided I need routine as I’m not at work!! Got 2 weeks until chemo starts so I’m blitzing the house one room at a time, and going to start going on a daily walk too. Feel more positive during the day than at night, that’s for sure!!

Hi all  One of the biggest issues for me was all the time alone at home, as hub works very long hours.  I don’t know if anyone has told you about places like The Haven. The people are wonderful & you can dip in & dip out as you wish. They are a really useful source of advice & offer free treatments that help with SEs like massage, reflexology, hypnotherapy (mine did me CD to help with the cold cap) & counselling.  There are also sessions on nutrition, lymphoedema, meditation & yoga. If you ask your BCN she should be able to tell you.  I found a local one under our Tesco, where I did my weekly shop, who knew!?! The Look Good Feel Better course are also good.  Just a thought to fill the day xx

We have a Haven in Hereford, a short train ride away for me. I’m ringing them tomorrow to arrange my first appointment  xx

Good luck  Windchime I’m sure it will be ok today, the worry before us the worst.  The nurse sat with me the whole way through my first one & kept me entertained with tales of her internet dating! She was single when I started chemo & is now all loved up with a dentist. I’ve obviously been chemo-ing for far too long?xx

Good luck windchime?, hope today has gone ok. I have just heard this morning that my first chemo is Fri 8th!

Hope all went well today Jan and Windchime (think it was just the 2 of you today) Fingers crossed that the side effects don’t hit you too hard.

Well done Jan! That’s great you were able to have it at home! So you need to tell your relative you chose not to have chemo, decided to go for a dose of Lemsip and an early night - for goodness sake!! That’s incredible someone thought it was ok to say that!!
I love that you’re sending your pony tail to the little princess trust, such a nice thing to do
Hope you can get a good night’s sleep tonight - don’t forget the Beechams! xxx

Sorry Jan, I didn’t realise you were starting today too, sounds like all has been ok. Do you feel any different?? I’m trying to prepare myself!!

Hello all, I hope everyone is as well as they can be and those who have started are doing as okay as they can with SE’s. It’s been nearly 9 weeks now since my mx and anc and will be 31 days this Friday since my oncology appointment and I still hadn’t heard anything about a start date, was getting concerned and worried that I’d been forgotten about! Called the department this afternoon and now have my planning appointment booked for Thursday and chemo will start either Monday or Tuesday. I’m worried that I’m not prepared enough and I’m scared of my first one, but I also just want to get on with it as well. Sissy xx

Thank you wind chime, it’s nice to read about what happens whilst you’re there. I’m a bit worried about headaches. I suffer from migraines with aura and had heard that chemo can bring them on. Having a migraine as well as other chemo side effects would be horrendous! Xx

Hi, had my first treatment of fec today and now sitting at home feeling a bit like a timebomb… I have a mild headache and heartburn and I’m feeling very heavy and tired but otherwise I’m ok. When does all the horribleness set in I was told about? Tina xx

Hi wind chime, thanks for your comment. I’m much the same as yesterday, no nausea still, very grateful for that. Just made myself a chart to try to understand the rather complicated instructions for the meds regime, ending up with an even more complicated chart/alarm system that I hope to understand when it happens.
A nice walk seems a good idea, I couldn’t get to sleep last night, was still awake at 3am.
Hope your new problem will(literally) resolve itself soon!
Tina

Hi Jan, How many cycles have you had so far? If it wast our first as well it’s still very much the fear of the unknown that drives our thoughts. I find that normal. As long as it stays like this - ok! I’m wAiting for my hair to go - probably in the next 5 to 7 days. Still one of the harshest aspects of this whole thing. But whatever may come - I’ll meet it head on, nothing else will do! Tinaxx

Thank you Windchime. How have you been feeling today? X
