Jumping and Jerking

Hi everyone so many things to read about on all the different threads but I wondered does anyone else have jolts in their spine. Its like a jumping and jerking. I have mets in s1/s2 amongst others.

Waiting for results of MRI as had a suspected stroke which then because the stroke wasnt showing on the scan at the time to make certain it wasnt just a stroke that takes a few scans to diagnose, my oncologist said its best to dot the i’s and cross the t’s.

Its driving me bonkers as I just fall to sleep and suddenly I get a jerk.

Many thanks for reading

hi Ann

Sorry haven’t had experience of this, well not in my back, just a suggestion (from a total non-medic !!!) could it be muscle spasms? I sometimes get these in my legs and they can suddenly wake me up when I’m just drifting off! It’s probably worth getting it checked out, as I wouldn’t know what causes them.

You have been through enough worry recently and don’t need any more!

Take care and here’s hoping you get good MRI results!

Nicola

Ann I did get something like this - it was a very strong jolt but I never thought it related to my spine mets or any of the other areas affected. I have no idea what caused it and some nights it would happen several times just as I was falling asleep. It stopped after some time and I haven’t had it come back at all.

I think these things are very common and extremely unlikely to be mets-related. (Search on hypnic jerk, hypnagogic jerk, sleep start, or night start )

Hope you get reassuring results on your MRI… and nights of peaceful sleep while waiting

Hi AnnB - mrsblue is right, I have had this and it is apparently very common. It happens just as we are drifting off to sleep and all our muscles relax - I think it’s also called myoclonic jolts. I think the issue is that for some people with muscular skeletal problems the jolt will cause discomfort, rather than the mets causing the jolt. I became aware of it when I had a painful shoulder problem - every time I got one of these jolts it hurt my shoulder and woke me up. For a couple nights I got virtually no sleep as this happened over and over again every time I started to drift off to sleep - probably 30 or more times - so I assume I did this all the time but had never been aware of it before.

I hope it turns out to be temporary as mine has - I still have the shoulder problem but I haven’t had a recurrence of the jolting issue.

Hi everyone

I have spontaneous jolts as I am about to drop off to sleep and whilst asleep, I’ve had it all my life. My OH finds it quite startling and it makes him jump too.

Hope have not gone into too much detail on the bedroom action in our house!!!

Hi everyone thanks so much for so many replies, its something I have had many times of the years but now Im waiting for MRI result, you know what its like everything becomes related.

MRI and CAT results Wednesday, damn waiting.

cheers again AnnB xxxxx
